The novel Friend
I ordered this book on-line. I heard it was really good. How different is it from the movie? I really liked the storyline between Paul and Samantha.

The movie and the book are both similar and different. Both have the same storyline between Paul and Samantha, with Paul of course bringing Samantha back to life from using BeeBee's microchips and machinary. The book however, describes Paul as obese and overweight and has no friends once so ever. He is frequently teased at school, while the movie has Paul as more of a tall, outgoing older and handsome teenager. Also the characters and there behaviors are a little bit different. Dr. Johanson, Paul's teacher and scientist, in the film is kind and caring. In the novel, Dr. Johanson is somewhat cruel and really does not care much for Paul or his robot. In the novel, BeeBee is destroyed by Samantha's father Harry, instead of Elvira. The novel also gives more input and dialogue to the characters past, especially with Paul, Jeanne and Harry. Sgt. Volchek is mentioned and talked about through most of the novel, and Elvira is killed by Samantha by being drowned in her bathtub, instead of being decapitated with a basketball as it is in the film.
I received my book of Friend today! I am already on page 70 and I am very impressed with the book! I have seen the differences and similaritys! It is a lot of fun to compare the movie with book.
shareFriend is a fantastic novel, infinitely better than Cravens version, although to be fair Craven had lost creative control thanks to Warners. That aside I love this book, took me a while to find a copy, but it was well worth the wait!! I think a remake could be on the cards.........
shareI finally read the book. Outstanding! I was really was pleased with it. I got it from alibris.com.
Friend was hard for me to get into. I read it mostly to see the differences between the book and the movie and they are sizable. Deadly Friend is more of a gory "re-imagining" of the novel. The novel just drags on and on, repeating a lot of the same scenes and character emotions over and over again. Seriously, by the ninth time Paul's mom is sick to death of worrying over her "Piggy" I was about ready to crack her head in with a baseball bat. Not that I'm a violent person but sometimes it's just drawn out of me :)
