a lot of people seem to dislike this movie simply because tom is in it..

which i think is crazy. tom is a decent actor and a great movie star, i really dont care about his personal life. now, i admit this wasn't his strongest performance and his hair is really annoying (i had fantasies of shaving it off on my first viewing) but its a great movie imo, if you dont like it fine but o dislike something because of one actor seems a bit harsh.

I agree Tom Cruise is an excellent actor, especially when he was in his 20's, actors of today in thier 20's are no were near what Tom Cruise was in the 80's. Honestley, I think much of the critizism is from his personal life, which is sad that people don't realize it's all about the acting.

i think your right but the film is underrated if you ask me. this is also pretty much the only film where i seen another actor outshine Cruise to which was Newman.

Completely agreed.

people just tend to hate Cruise because of his personal life with the whole scientology stuff etc etc.

because if you ask me Cruise is my favorite overall actor simply because he's been in quality film after quality film over such a long time period now as it's been 25+ years and i can't think of ANY other actor out there that has matched his level of films quality time after time.

so basically when he stars in a film you can almost guarantee it will be pretty good and sometimes great. because out of his whole 25+ year career i think he's only had maybe a handful of somewhat weaker films that he starred in while most of them i would say are at least a solid 7/10 and many are in the 8/10 range and some even higher than that in my book. because while there is many other solid actors out there they are much more hit and miss then he is especially when you consider he's been doing movies for 25+ years.

but generally speaking i think Cruise has gotten better as each decades passes from the 80's to 90's to 00's as i think he peaked in the 00's as pretty much every film he starred in in the 2000's was around a 8/10 and some even higher in my book. but even though i been praising the crap of him i would say his recent 'Knight & Day', even though i liked it, was pretty much his weakest film that he starred in since sometime in the 1990's, probably would have to go back to 'The Firm' (1993) to find something that was overall weaker than Knight & Day.

i think his best films from each decade of 80's to 90's to 00's...

1980's...
-Risky Business
-The Color of Money
-Top Gun

1990's...
-Mission Impossible
-Jerry MaGuire
-Interview With The Vampire

2000's...

pretty much everything he starred in, in the 2000's was solid as it's not as clear cut to pick a Top3 or so from each decade like it was for him in the 80's and 90's. but if i had to list some i would say... Collateral/The Last Samurai/Mission Impossible II/Valkyrie etc.

so basically... you can see the ones i tend to find myself reviewing the most especially if i am going to be re-watching his 80's or 90's films as the 2000's pretty much everything he starred in it was solid and generally memorable.

I don't understand this! Tom Cruise was a great actor in the 80s and 90s. His performance in The Color of Money was on the money. He has this great energy which he isn't credited enough for in my opinion. Af far as I'm concerned Tom Cruise deserved an Oscar nomination for this film. Paul Newmans performance was grea and he got an Oscar for it. Don't know if he should have won, maybe this was a compensation Oscar, for all the times he was snubbed.

As someone said in an earlier post but Vincent's hair being annoying.....He hair was perfect for the character he was playing. He looked and acted like a goof which made people/pool players want to beat this guy really. The way he looked, acted, dressed...no one suspected him of being a hustler.

He did Risky Business when he was 19, while James Dean did East of Eden at 24.

Cruise and Penn were the top young actors of the 80s, and River Phoenix.

I think this movie would have been better if Matt Dillon was in it.

reply

A lot of people don't like this film because it does not hold a candle to The Hustler and not primarily because of Tom Cruise.

reply

RichHartford is exactly right.

And I like the the color of money, a lot. But it's just not as good as the Hustler.
