never got back on track after Eddie left Vince

I think there's some great stuff in this movie, including some classic Scorcese style, but in the end it's a Saturday afternoon movie. There's a smoldering allure to the dingy pool halls, the generic blues music, and the burnt out characters. Its not bad, it's watchable, but it ends up feeling hollow. A wiley veteran showing the cocky rookie the ropes is cliche, but it was pulled off very well with Newman and Cruise. Unfortunately the sudden break from that story, while commendable in its attempt at originality, felt directionless. It almost seemed like two different movies.
