please help, what is this film

okay, its not quest for fire or clan of the cave bear. its about prehistoric times, after dinosaurs. there is a tribe of half human, ape people, they are covered in read hair, its a bit like a documentary. anyhow the main characters family/clan are murdered by humans who are the next stage in evolution, although i seem to remember that you never really see them (i think there was a narration) the main character journeys through the landscape searching for more of his kind (there is no speaking, just grunting) it ends with the ape man standing on a beach like its the end of the world, looking out to sea, symbolises that his race has come to an end.

i think it was a british actor in the suit, and i seem tro remember having it taped off tv in late 80's. it might be earlier than that (late 70's) please help if you can
