The thing about 'prehistoric' movies...

Is this: Evolution is gradual but no way would the people that far back look quite like people today, and the makeup artists can only go so far.

It would be cool as hell to do a movie that takes place in the early stages of human evolution where avatar level motion capture is used to create the precursors to modern humans to a level beyond what makeup can.

Does anyone know how long ago this story is supposed to take place? I think the Neanderthals went extinct 30,000 years ago?

Lastly, anyone else thank GOD that they did not live back then? Life in such a primitive world would suck beyond belief. Everyone who had to live back then was cursed and we modern people are living indirectly off of their efforts.

It's set during the bulk of the last ice age 20000-30000 years ago (though the cave paintings mentioned in later books indicate that it should have been far more recent). Ayla would look much like we look today, as we are decended from Cro-Magnons. As the movie didn't have a huge budget and it was 1986, the Neanderthals were cheaped out on a little. The books describe them differently differently.

Check out 'Quest for Fire'.

It's way better than this movie.
