A possible way to get these books as movies properly!
I would want some good director with deep pockets to do a proper LOTR/Hobbit type treatment to the books of Jean Auel.
Ayla (main character of the book) is a hero of the stone age era and she overcame many bad stuff and made an epic journey from east to west Europe. She became a person of strength in character, and the books of Jean Auel deserve to have the same treatment in movies similar to such movies as LOTR or Hobbit trilogies.
Also I've been thinking of the dialogue and some of the later "telling about her past" solves this. Start the story for the movies as she finds the wounded Jondolar, and then by the magic of flashbacks done as story telling, showing more and more complex sequences which would also show Ayla's growing command of spoken language, she can tell the story of Clan acting as their voice as they lack it themselves. They are shown doing hand signing and such, she tells in words what we're seeing them say like is described about her doing when she's demonstrating their language when she arrives at Zelandonii lands and is showing it to Jondolar's kin.
Jondolar could also tell about his journey with his brother, but it would cut to them having a conversation. Hence creating a difference between how Ayla tells her past to how he can do it with language.
The books have been described as a source of inspiration for anthropologists etc., so when making the book into a proper it needs to capture the spirit of that long forgotten past. As Ayla says herself in the book in her own way, her journey was one to learn that there are two versions of humans out there but that each is as valuable as the other. Not much different from some the stuff we encounter in our own modern lives then.
I am not sure of which director would be best for this project and even less sure who would make a good Ayla and a good Jondolar (and all other major characters), but I am sure there's people out there who could do it if there was the will to do it (and if Jean Auel wanted a new movie done of course).
Four ingredients for a good movie series of the books for me is:
1) Ayla and Jondolar need to be shown as two humans with insecurities that they slowly overcome, turns into love, and finally overcomes misunderstanding as well. Both need to be portrayed as they are in the books: Ayla as an exceptional healer and Jondolar as the master flint napper and weapon innovator that he is.
2) The journey should be as authentic to the descriptions in the books as can be. CGI in the missing animals (it was done for Jurassic Park so could be done for this too). Using body motion suits against dummies would both capture the hunting skill as well as mix up the human and CGI to make it appear that a real hunt for mammoths is being done by them.
3) As Ayla says, they're just humans communicating differently from those who do it in spoken word, so make the non-speaking of these humans intelligent, fluid and believable.
4) Be as authentic to the books as you can get. As stated above, you can easily do the silent parts of the Clan only with "translations" by Ayla retelling their story and history to us who only speak with words. It would get us into the world of Clan in a proper, more authentic way. You can even give deaf people proper lines of communication too.
