Both the original 1978 version and the 2005 remake of Dawn of the Dead take place in malls.
The 1973 made-for-TV thriller Trapped features James Brolin as a man trapped overnight in a department store being patrolled by killer watch dogs. Supposedly, it was this movie that gave the producers of Chopping Mall their idea...
The 2002 movie The Rats features killer rats invading a New York department store.

You are correct about this filmbuff-36 about the idea that the writers and director of the film came up with this idea for the film. It is in the special features on the DVD. I watched it last night.

HIDE AND GO SHRIEK, which is only out on VHS..
also, the second half of THE INITIATION takes place in a mall.
It is sad when films only come out on VHS and we do not get to see them released on DVD at all.

Boo hoo get a vcr they're like 10 bucks at thrift shops and flea markets. Honestly ,watching movies that were released originally on VCR on a DVD kinda takes the nostalgia away

Director Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2 (1990), Blown Away (1994), the series 24) made his first movie Dangerous Game in 1987 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101656/ . It's a horror thriller about a group of kids who break into a huge store and a crazed cop who decides to kill 'em for it. Definitely watch the movie, if you can find it.

I always thought malls were creepy though, and always wished they made a movie version of the "Silent Night" Fear Street Trilogy-- which mostly takes place in a department store, where the manager's bratty daughter gets what's coming to her... more or less.

MANNEQUIN was one hell of a scary movie! its an example of a "comedy" so bad it's scary!
shareIntruder is good and takes place in a supermarket. It is directed by Scott Spiegel, the guy who co-wrote Evil Dead II.

Only one scene in Elves takes place in a shopping mall. It doesn't even last 10 minutes.
From my memory I remember there was several scenes that took place in a mall. A few of the main characters also work in a mall if my memory serves me right. I may just have to break out the VHS of it tonight a revisit it.

TRAPPED an abc movie of the week from the 70's starring james brolin as a man who gets mugged in a mall bathroom and wakes up to find himself locked in the mall with 6 attack dobermans. very cool little thriller.
