I realise this film has a serious side to it but the comments and hilarious events which follow Bo & Roy around are just pure genius! When he throws the bottle of bud and it hits the old woman, that was just classic!
I mean the film is meant for us to get a look at kids who have no respect and are not disturbed by violence...
if this film doesn't at least make you ponder about the serious aspects, or disgust you in some way... then you are perhaps more like the lead characters than you think... jmo
I saw this film a couple of years after it came out on video---had never heard it, and was curious about it---didn't like all the pic of real serial killers on the video box, though. Saw the film (it was the second film I'd seen Charlie Sheen in) and it was very disturbing---watching it once was enough. I didn't get why the blonde dude did what he did to the women his friend was getting it on with---that was disturbing and brutal for words. How anyone could think any of the horrible stuff in this film was funny is beyond me. Apparently it's only funny when you're drunk, I guess.
Watch the scene again and pause when Bo hands over the cash. He clearly hands him two one dollar bills. Bo was mistaken and thought he handed him a five and a one, probably due to how tired he was. The cashier did not rip him off. Bo was wrong.
Also, Roy was ready to snap at a moments notice. Anything could (and does) trigger it. He's got stuff inside of him.
You could be right about chain of events. And the blond dude may have felt justified to get pissed off since he was acting on his friend's behalf, to get his money back. But I didn't find it funny when he tossed the beer bottle in the direction of the old woman. Not sure if he was trying to hit her, but as fate would have it, the beer hits her directly on the head. Even for a young person that would be very painful, but for an older person it could prove fatal. There were moments when they showed endearing qualities, but taking a cheap shot on the old lady (who had done nothing to him) was a scene I did not like. I think this scene and all the other ones where he does something he shouldn't -- beating the guy at the gas station, then the homosexual, then later the chick who liked his friend... they all seem a bit like the scenes from Falling Down, where we ask ourselves "how far would we go?" Skipping school? A lot of us would have done that! I do agree that there are a lot of funny lines, like "his name isn't bob. his name is BOB."
I think the charcter Roy deserves a bit more respect than "the blonde dude" How can you not be sure he wasn't trying to hit her?? That was the best throw I've ever seen!
I think the old woman was asking for it a bit.. Now I know that people had more respect for their elders in the 50's etc but since the 60's things have gone wrong. Not sure what its like in the states but here in England people would sooner juk you in the stomach than say hello. The geezer was wound up because someone tried to rip his mate out of some bucks and then he's seeing some old woman "give it". While his method of dealing with it is somewhat questionable I agree that you can't deny the accuracy of shot, licking his fingers before he picked up the bottle also signalled his intent at pulling of the shot of the century. Forget Shane Warne against Mike Gatting, this was it...
I think you guys get my drift, i.e. that hitting an old lady with a beer bottle is NOT funny. That's all. I said "blond dude" because I didn't remember the names. Bo and Roy, is that right?
I did laugh at some lines but the film does explore the dark side of Roy, the "stuff" he has inside of him. In this sense the film is certainly a serious film. Because we know there are real-life cases of amok-running.
Throwing a beer bottle at an old lady is perhaps the most classic/brilliant thing i've ever seen in a movie.I have ripped that scene to my pc,just due to its sheer genius.
Zavier, maybe you should check out the "Faces of Death" series. Some people find that funny. I know what to expect and I know that I couldn't watch it. But if you're into the macabre, check out "Faces of Death".
Seen alot of that, seen people get shot, hit by trains and executed.I'll be honest i dont like it much, but there is a drastic difference between violence scenes from this movie, and faces of death.
yeh, this movie is a great one. i found great laughs throughout the film. everyone is fair game in this one -even the old broad. bo and roy do dish out some pretty serious punishment and suffering. it delivers the goods. one of those great underated classics.
me and my friend used to watch this drunk all the time and laugh our heads off...the fact that there was serious elements was kind of a downer...but the funny things only worked because it was based on a serious premise
hilarious highlights
Obviously! the bottle and old lady thing...roy licks his fingers and said..."ok...party time...party time man!"..and *whistles* off the bottle go's and konks and old biddy in the *beep* brilliant!!...and they are laughing and everyone else is shocked as hell by this...and then those bimbo's chase after them and they deny any responsibility
when roy beats the piss out of the indian gas station attendant for 2 dollars...and that awesome 80's music comes on as a nice soundtrack to every hit...that fight (more of an ass whooping) was very well coreagraphed...kudos to whoever handled that
when roy grabs the wiccan bitch or whatever and starts shaking her...that is PRICELESS...you could see the jealousy in his eyes...loved it "YOU F UCKED THAT!?!"
when bo and roy are driving down the strip and are just mindlessly yelling like idiots the best was charlie sheens most random "arrrrggggghhhH!!!"
when roy shoots the girl.."this is my world sucka"
Don't really no? lifes a game to Roy? or maybe he's just jealous of the couple and implies that that kissing and canoodling is his game? like he should be doing it?
I cringed at the scenes with the old lady and killing the gay dude. Just cold-blooded.
Agree the attack on the gas-station attendant was spectacular, although that may have been all the actor's improvisation (i.e. no choreography).
The line about "this is my game" was in response to how they ignored him completely at the video arcade as he was totally inept on those machines (I can relate). So he felt again shut out like a pariah and made up his own video game.
Like "Falling Down" the scenes have a certain humor while making you feel ill at ease. Both films force you to ask yourself "how far would I go?" Attacking the gas-station attendant was already way over the top. Pissing in the pool or horsing around in their home town didn't seem so bad. But in many ways this film is credible in that it COULD happen, because he is a young man coming out of high school revelling in his first chance at doing what HE wants to do without being told what he can or cannot do.
no, if you recall, before roy shoots the girl, he and bo were watching her and her boyfriend at an arcade playing some video games. and bo was playing one of them and screamed out "i suck at these games"
Bo and Roy can't make friends, can't pick up girls, and are going to work in a dead end job for the rest of their lives. They are powerless in this world. Roy saying "I suck at these games" as Bo fails to pick up the girl has a deeper meaning: he sucks at the game of life. They are losers and will never get the things that they want.
When Roy kills the girl and her boyfriend, he is playing a new game he can win: the game of death. After being in a powerless position for all of their lives, they are finally able to exert some force on the world and mould it to their will.
I know my brother and I use to watch it over and over rewinding the hilarious scenes.I need to see this movie again I am laughing out loud remebering it now LMAO !
I've got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me
the guy at the bar "TURN ON THE HOCKEY GAME! TURN ON THE *beep* HOCKEY GAME!"
kind of funny during the assaults, roy does most of the damage while bo just stands there with his mouth open, then when they talk about it bo says "we".
