I completely agree with this movie being underrated. There are just some movies out there that touch me for one reason or another and this is one of them. I, too, watched this movie when I was younger and have liked it ever since. There is just something about the movie that inspires me (and makes me cry). The quality of the acting is one of the reasons this movie is timeless.

If anyone listens to DVD commentaries, this one is packed with insights on the making of the movie and Lucy Deakins actually participates (after a seemingly long stint out of movie/tv acting). When I heard about the lovely time everyone had making the film (even Fred Savage who was so young) it just reiterated how sometimes the "feeling" of a movie surpasses the plot, the writing, the directing and the acting as a deterimining factor for whether the movie is good or not (at least for me anyway).
