I noticed a black widow silhouette in the ocean...

Well, at least I thought it was. The scene occurs when the Catherine character "saves" Alex from drowning. After the two share an the exchange, the camera focuses on a wave reaching the beach. Within the wave, a shadow of a palm tree appears, which looks like a black widow spider. Since the camera fixed on that spot while an ominous music score is played, I believe this was done intentionally.

Gluaerty, I got my copy of BW out, played it, and it's very noticeable. It's clearly a tree, but the upward-shooting branches definitely look like a spider. One of the things I love about sharing stuff here is reading other people's observations on movies. Another thing, would a tree be sticking that far out to make such a large shadow on the wave? I think it was there to remind us of a spider. Thanks.

I agree: I've watched the film so many times, and I can't believe I just now noticed the silhouette, and that a tree on land has such a visible shadow. I like the film even more since I figured that scene out.

Gluserty, right. I don't think a real tree would bend over or lean over the water that far, so obviously added for the viewer to pick up on subconsciously. That's one of the things I like about these boards, people can exchange those observations.

Yeah, no kidding; I'm surrounded by trees and they don't imply anything:-). Overall, I enjoyed the relationship between Catharine and Alex, and how complex it was. For myself, I think Catharine had more emotional feelings for Alex than anyone previously.
