unconvincing plot

While I was sufficiently entertained by this film to watch it to the end, it uses a really annoying plot device that we have seen over and over in many films. All the police are so dumb that they just don't get it and the only one who does is the protaganist. It is ALWAYS totally unconvincing, especially to anyone who watches the criminal investigation shows on Court TV and other channels. Cops have all sorts of things they consider when anyone dies unexpectedly and the idea that only one person would be suspicious after multiple deaths is really unconvincing. Nevertheless, I am willing to ignore dramatic licence if the film is enytertaining and it was ... mildly.

Agreed. A film really needs some magnificent directing and other elements to make the viewer totally forget about those small flaws, such as the one you described. I watched this film today on AMC and that also bothered me.

I watched it today on cable simply because of the on-location filming in Hawaii. To my pleasant surprise, it included my hometown of Hilo. I rcognized the street scenes and they utilized my intermediate (jr. high) school as the police cell-block. In the final scene with Alex leaving the cell-block, the camera shot through the door showed my high school across the street.

I kind of agree, but also the plot didn't seem so unconvincing in the first place to me because they did a good job of showing that Debra Winger's character had this hunch that the other police just didn't have.

I just remind myself that it was 1987 and tell myself they didn't have the same technology as we do now, I laughed looking at the computers they were using close to the start of the movie.
