the leading man (Paul) was horribly miscast
I'm sorry folks but the movie went downhill after the great first hour when they went to the island and both fell in love with a cross between Kermit the Frog, Gonzo the Great, and Ghandi.

shareLOL. Ok, I have to agree that Paul was a noob, but the chemistry between Theresa and Debra was great. I kept thinking that the two of them were going to hop into bed together. Paul was just a bystander. He was not pivotal to the story. The guy who plays Paul must have been one of the producers or something, because I have no idea why they would cast someone who looked like that. Furthermore, his idea of putting a hotel within walking distance to an active volcano is ridiculous. Who in the world would want to be in a place with noxious gasses, horrible rumblings and the possibility of being burned alived by lava????
The story, to me, is about the Theresa and Debra characters, the passions and obsessions that led them together.

I agree! When I was on Kauai I met many, many more attractive men who would have made a more perfect Paul! Even the darling cop standing at the door of Shin's office would have made a more believable Paul!
... I admire a person that's willing to do whatever is necessary.
I doubt they wanted some show-pony jock who looked like an out of work TV actor playing Paul, I actually think the casting was good in that Paul didn't take the spotlight off the two women.

the dude who played that cop looked like he was 13, lol. now HE was probably related to one of the producers.

In the first scene, as they were trekking up to the mountain, before he spoke, his movements were so wooden I thought he was a local, hired to play a tour guide. WHen he opened his mouth I realized he was an actor a really bad actor.
James Hong's Private Eye was so bizarre and hilarious -- the whole film seems to cloak itself in a level of tongue in cheekness that it becomes difficult to distinguish the intentional humor from the unintentional. This is a fairly cowardly way to mask incompetence, and reveals an appropriately half hearted commitment to the material.
Sami Frey has some standing in European films, and he wasn't all that bad in The Little Drummer Girl. He also looked kind of cute when he was younger: http://cinema.encyclopedie.personnalites.bifi.fr/images/fiche_bio/b003 /img0035.jpg
Another mitigating factor in his woodenness is his Frenchness. I read once that it's really hard for native speakers of French to sound expressive in English because French is monotonous or something.
And I do credit the notion that Renni is all about money, not looks or romance.
HOWEVER, this is not to say he was well cast! It might have been fun to see someone with more straight-up good looks than him. There wasn't a single male "looker" in the whole film.
MaratSade, you appear to be a frog, or a frog-lover yourself.

Have another bite of popcorn and forget about it.
French is monotonous? Ha ha ! That's a good one!
shareCompared to American English, French is, in fact, spoken in a kind of monotone. One can hear this if one views any random French films versus any random American film. And I speak French fluently, so, no, I don't think the comment was so hilarious.
As for Sammy Frey, I do NOT know what everyone's so "on" about! I have been a fan of French films for decades, have seen him in films for decades, and have always tho't him to be very handsome. And I tho't he was handsome in this film! Jeez! I seem to be VERY out of the loop here! If I'm so out of the loop, how come both my handsome, foreign, ex-husbands were stolen by women who just had to have them for themselves? There must be others out there like me! My luck they had to know me and my latest husband!
Kermit the Frog? Whaaa??? Somebody's nuts. And I don't think it's me. "A friend of the producer"? I think NOT! Sammy Frey is a very well-respected actor back in his native France.
Phew! With the comments from you guys, I'm just glad Alain Delon decided on only rare occasions to come to the States to work during his career! You guys would probably call HIM ugly! Sheesh!
At last someone who talked some sense in this ridiculous thread :-)
In fact, I only watched this piece of..., err, atmospheric noir because he was in there.
To other posters: take a look at him in "Manon 70". Or in "Cesar et Rosalie". Or at least in "War and Remembrance", if anything French is too arty-farty.
Just watched the movie for the first time in some years.
I agree that he's very attractive. I looked at the photos of him in his younger years and he was gorgeous, but is still nice looking in this film.
Isabelle Adjani and Valerie Kapriski are two French-speaking actresses who notoriously struggled with English inflection to the detriment of the movies they were in. They could not overcome the tendency to monotone in native French.

Think cynical thoughts.

Sami Frey was squiring Briget Bardot all over the World..when they were quite young so.......I think he is World's better than 90%of 2012 squirrelss, rappers and the like.
Are you people kidding?! I love Sami Frey in this role and think he's perfect! After being married to 2 older men, why wouldn't Rennie be ready for someone younger for a few romps before doing him in? That accent, those soulful eyes. Take me now! *:)
This is the only movie I've ever seen Sami Frey in and I love it. He's perfect.
Thank God SOMEbody has some sense!
You are, of course, 100% correct. I'm with you.
I agree. The film really suffers because of Frey's performance. After Nicol Williamson and even the little snippet we see of Dennis Hopper, two very charismatic actors, Frey just doesn't cut it.
shareI think he was perfect. He was good looking enough, and then his huge bank account made him a "10" to both women (even Debra Winger's character had to take it into consideration when looking at the whole package).
I think it is less believable when you have a gorgeous, rich character like Robert Redford in "Indecent Proposal". You get a million dollars to sleep with him- WOW!
If Paul had been young, gorgeous, and rich she might not of wanted to do him in. Or it would have been a little harder for the audience to believe that she would want to kill him.
You can't say that Sami Frey is not good looking:

OK, he had not aged particularly well but I assume most French men do not. All the smoking and stuff..
