I remember the first time I watched this back in the day. I was kind of like "what the fuck, that's it??" when it ended the way it did. But in subsequent viewings the ending was pretty much perfect and extremely powerful. The way Sean Penn's character struggled to get the phrase my father out of his mouth. I'm tearing up right now just thinking about how horrible it would be to be part of that family and to go through those things.
Great movie, Walken and Penn were terrific. It was based on Bruce Alfred Johnston Sr. who led a murderous theft gang in Pennsylvania during the 70s. They were really bad guys to put it mildly.
