and that's why every girl should own and learn how to use a swiss army knife or at least carry a taser, if not a good set of keys. ;)

It really did make me made. It looked like he was hoping she stick by her boyfriend so he could rape her!

IMO, that is not the lesson here. Against some attackers, such weapons used by a determined practiced person with some skill and aforethought can be effective. However, Brad Sr. was a seasoned criminal and she was a drunk and drugged high-school girl - he would have simply taken the weapon away from her and hopefully not used it on her.

The lesson is to be careful of dangerous and cunning people. She should never have allowed herself to come into his power. He used the same technique to subdue her that he used on the informant - he pretended friendliness to her while encouraging her getting drunk and drugged. Then he led her into the motel room.

I think the rape was just part of his predatory nature - he wanted to abuse and scare her and she was vulnerable, so he took advantage of her situation. After all, his criminal mentality felt entitled to everything, especially if it did not belong to him.
