Pretty intense film
I was skeptical at first but this a really enjoyable film.
shareHi guys,
I first seen this film back in 1988...and wow what a cracker.
The fact that it was based on a true story...and that the Whitwood gang did exist made it even more compelling to watch...they were called the Johnston gang...Bruce senior johnston was the boss....5 teenagers were slane.
The actual real story is as dark as the movie...Bruce senior recently died in prison...
Sean Penn acts his socks off...and that take some doing when your acting with Walken who also plays a great part.
Great soundtrack also....Man Sean Penn must have done some serious weightlifting for this role Ray Kaybratas had pumped his arms up to obscene size.
Bruce junior who was shot several times and lived..is now on a witness protection program
Cheers
Martin
i agree penn and walken did a suberb job working together in the movie
and yeah it was really intense!
p.s. i wish i was born 50 years a go
i would see such great actors emerging and see so many good movies becoming alive
*sigh*
:)
I first saw this movie in the early 90's. I was 13 when it first came out and when I watched it later I was glad my mom wouldnt let me see it when I was younger. It was shocking and painful and I have now grow to love this movie. Sean Penn and Christopher Walken are both amazing in this film and the intensity of their relationsip is so real. When I learned that it was based on a true story it made it even more real and am now on a search to find out about the lives of the characters that inspired this movie. I was wondering if anyone out there had any or know of where to find photos of the actual people. Robin Miller, Bruce Johnston Sr., Duane Lincoln, Jimmy and Wayne Sampson, Jimmy and Norman Johnston and Ricky Mitchell? I have searched everywhere and find nothing. I know it will be impossible to see pics of Bruce Jr. since he is in hiding. If anyone has any info please pm me. Thanks!

Here is Bruce Sr. Not a very good picture, but it is his obituary

his brother Norman (Patch in the movie), escaped from Prison a few years back but was caught in PA. I saw pictures of him on the net at the time, I'll see if i can find them again. In the picture I saw, Tracy Walter looked similar to him
Never seen one of Bruce Jr. although i'm pretty sure that I've read he is out of hiding now. He was even arrested along with some other guy about 2-3 years ago in PA for theft.
I've never been able to get enough of this story as I live in NJ, and have been to some of the towns where it took place
I'm 43 years old. In my life, I've known and grown-up around people like Brad Whitewood Sr. Many want to think that people like this only exist in movies-the fact that THIS movie is based on fact proves that such people do exist. Quite simply, people like Brad Whitewood are PREDATORS in EVERY sense of the word.
The "buzz" about this movie in 1986 was the relationship between Madonna and Sean Penn. It was a time when Penn was punching alot of tabloid photographers and getting into assorted (minor) legal scuffles. Another post on this site begs the question: "why doesn't Sean Penn get the recognition...", my take on this is because he alienated the media in the early years of his career. I remember reading more about the "Live to Tell" soundtrack of this movie than the actual movie, itself. Such was the power of Madonna in 1986.
Get a good look at this film, because this was the kind of movie you could find before "Hollywood" became a dirty word in the film industry. There are no special effects, sequels, CGI, prosthesis, or body-doubles in this movie. What there IS: a great setting, with great actors, and above all- a great script. Take a close look at the sets, the way the characters are dressed, the drinking and cigarettes, the cars and trucks- all are faithful to a place in the south that some of us have visited- and many have grown up in.
At Close Range certainly has its weaknesses. Christopher Walken is not one of them. He occasionally is accused of over-acting, but I saw no evidence of it in this performance. Penn liked to under-play characters in his early work, and the characterization of Brad jr.- particularly when viewed next to the powerful portrayal by Walken, makes for an emotionally unsettling film.
(obviously)- I really enjoyed it.
It took place in Pennsylvania Amish Country...Not the south.

Real people, absolutely, this movie reminded me of my father in-law. Except my father in-law was much less direct and to my knowledge never murdered anyone. He has this way of picking up people and grooming them to do his dirty work, especially young men without fathers. Unfortunately he had five sons, four of whom he destroyed, slowly.
What hump?
It's not the easiest watch, but the film is completely riveting.
shareYes this is the original film that highlighted Sean Penn's skill and talent as an actor. Christopher Walken is superb in his role as well.
Those scenes with the boys being taken out at night (and you know what happens) still chill me today, whenever I watch this film.

With the exception of two very good lead performances from Sean Penn and Christopher Walken I thought this was a very weak film. Very obvious direction from Foley who manages to make so many choice moments phony and silly - the hose scene with Sean Penn was a good laugh - that it wrecks the intensity of the material. To be fair, it's a pretty weak script with poorly written characters who have nothing interesting to say... ever. The score is severly overused - enough so that one can guess right when they are going to queue it up for a "dramatic" moment. I had high hopes for this one, but with the exception of the scenes involving Penn and Walken together, it's a total bust.

To Oliver-50: Sorry brother, I have to disagree. The cinemetography in this film was beautiful - including the hose scene. Even a filler spot, like Camaro running up the rural road was stunningly shot. It's a feast for the eyes. The characters were compelling and well acted. Quirky yes, but phony? I truly believe you're the minority on this one friend (among crtitics and amature critics alike). But hey, everyone has their own opinion.
shareAT CLOSE RANGE is a masterpiece,an heartbreaking film with wonderful performances and great visuals and music...underrated,it is really one of the best films of the 80's.
And it is also my favorite Sean Penn performance and film ever.
I agree, i think sean and christopher walken were great in this film, i like this film in general, althought it's shocking and sad when you know it's true.
I also wanted to say i thought Sean and Mary Stuart masterson had great chemistry aswell.I think mary is a great actress.I like some of her other films aswell.
i COME FROM pa SUBURBS AND THIS FILM IS TRUE TO ITS SETTING.
shareI also think that the score adds to the intensity of this film !!.It's very haunting. This is a film that i can't watch just before i go to sleep." Boys don't cry " is a similar film which also has the same effect on me. Theya re a couple of the most disturbing films i've seen, especially as they are based on true stories.
shareDef intense. High stakes. Awesome tragedy. Pitch perfect drama. Great film. Great sound track. Films like Drive only wish they were this good, though I enjoyed Drive.
