'Somewhere Out There'; Spoilers included !
This wonderful, under-rated animation, featured the song "Somewhere Out There", which lost the Oscar to the dreadful "You Take My Breath Away". I'll never understand why it lost. This film cleverly disguised as a cartoon so as to attract children to learn about how the Bolsheviks forced and terrorized the Russian Jews in the 1900's. The Jews were portrayed as adorable mice while the cats were the bad guys. The mice lived under a cloud of fear and weren't allowed to worship for fear of arrest or death. The story shows the hard voyage to America and how young Fievel gets separated from his beloved family. I wonder if any immigrant children actually did get separated before entering America? It is possible. The inspiring finale, showing how the immigrants worked together to stop the terrorists and the ultimate return of Fievel to his family, was very inspiring. This film is a must-see yet it is rarely shown on cable TV.
