Wow... this film has a whole new meaning

When I first saw this I must've been 6. I loved it, but clearly didn't understand what it was about AT ALL.
This is an allegory for a family of Russian Jews immigrating to America, for one. I never pieced together why that was important. I also didn't notice all the Irish immigrants in the film until I just recently watched it again. This entire movie takes on an entirely new significance when you get what's actually going on.

I guess Spielberg made this film so that the kids would like the pretty colors and the music, and the parents would understand what was really ironic and funny about the boatload of immigrants singing "There are no cats in America" ("we'll be free from oppression in America") and get the messages laced throughout the film. Then, on the drive home, the parents would have to explain to the kids what was really going on, and how these ethnic groups had been persecuted and what turn of the 20th Century foreigners had to go through.

I never clicked with this movie when I was young, but when I saw it last night (stoned- woooow...) I recognized how deep the story was.
This movie is still amazing.

I can't believe it has a rating of 6. I hate retarded voters.

-Everybody! Get this! Did you hear this thing about Scientology? Turns out it's bad...
