This was made with a sequel in mind, unfortunately

Right at the end of the closing credits, a scurrying sound is heard, signifying a facehugger on the Sulaco and the death of all of the survivors except Ripley in Alien 3.

It may not have meant that for a sequel to Aliens, but that fucking sequel killed off Ripley's new family, so I pay it no mind.

Yes, the sound of a facehugger was included in the credits, but Cameron clearly stated that it is just a wink at the audience and not part of the plot.

"James Cameron: That's a sound of a facehugger. (...) That was just a little kicker at the end."

So no, no concrete plans for a sequel at the time, just Cameron having some fun.

... until the creators of A3 took it literally and even though there was no conceivable way that egg could have gotten to the Sulaco, they went with it (in the most nonsensical way possible to boot).

reply

Agreed, and thanks for the background.

reply

It isn't that there was no conceivable way that egg could have gotten on board. It's where it was and it hatching unprovoked and it finding and then locating and entering the sealed stasis room that was inconceivable.

Good point, no way Ripley wouldn't SCOUR every inch of the drop ship and Sulaco where the queen could've left an egg.

reply

The Queen ripped free from her ovipositor to chase Ripley. I have absolutely no trouble believing that there was an egg or two still in her when the process was interrupted.

On the Sulaco the Queen is alone for a while Newt hides under the floor and Ripley is getting into the power loader. She could have easily deposited some eggs somewhere in the event she didn't survive.

reply

And the (almost) explosive decompression from the open airlock would've sucked those eggs out into space! Do you honestly think a xenomorph queen would comprehend what that meant?

Aliens was the last canonical Alien franchise movie for me, everything since then is pure shit.

reply

In Alien 3 we see one of the eggs hanging upside down so it's probably attached with the xeno's secreted resin. That resin was strong enough to secure fully grown humans to a wall to allow the facehuggers to impregnate them. Stands to reason that it could remain intact due to the vacuum. We even see Ripley climbing out of the airlock against the force of the vacuum.

I'm not saying all this was planned by the filmmakers or makes the most sense but I can suspend my disbelief for this one.

reply

There could have been a hundred eggs on the Sulaco and Ripley would have had no way of knowing
