What the hell were they thinking?
Why take a great horror movie and follow it up with a lame action movie?

shareI'll ignore the "lame" part, but as for why make an action follow up to a horror movie, the answer is simple.
Cameron knew, aswell as most people do, that Alien is a brilliant display of creeping terror and cold sweat inducing horror. So he must have figured that there was no way he would be able to match it, let alone surpass it.
So he flipped it all around and made a (brillliant as far as I am concerned) action movie sequel instead, so as to avoid too many comparisons to Ridley Scott's awesome original.
The only way to make GOOD sequels is to make it bigger and have fun with it. Another example is the brilliant follow up to Gremlins!
You cannot possible live up to the expectations after the original so you put it in a different environment and show more layers/dimensions.

Thank you! I'm glad there are more who appreciate it like me but sadly they don't make them like that anymore :(
It's full of cameos (not just Hogan and Stallone) and amazingly versatile ideas from The phantom of the opera to mutant spider-gremlin entering to Slayer's Angel of death!
I am crying with laughter while writing this! I think it's time for a re-watch.
Stallone has a cameo in Gremlins 2???
shareWell if you're going to do a remake it can hardly be similar to the first otherwise you're just producing a virtual remake. It's why Alien3 failed for me, it was basically Alien in a prison colony. It's similar to why the Jurassic Park franchise for example started going downhill after the Lost world or perhaps even because of it. Like how many movies can you sell with the same plot time after time 'dinosaurs chasing people around an island'.
You want a franchise to work you gotta keep shaking it up.
We have to show the world that not all of us are like him: Henning von Tresckow.
yes its an action movie but its arguably the best action movie ever made. A sci-fi war film with creatures like this had never been done before it was an original concept that people wanted to see. it was so good Renny Harlin quit working on Alien 3 because he knew he couldnt surpass it. Its also why Ridley Scott messed up Prometheus so much , he knew it was pretty much an inferior copy of alien so tried to change it about.Maybe you like watching the exact same film over and over again, maybe you are looking forward to the fast and furious 8 or transformers 5 but a lot of people dont.
shareCameron is a fvck!ng god...do not question his majesty!
When this baby hits 88 mph, you're going to see some serious sh!t.
