Might just be me, but I always got a kinda stalker-y vibe from Burke where Ripley was concerned.
I think he had the hots for her and he was blinded by this fact (and his own ego) into thinking that she would go along with his plan to bring back a Xeno specimen and they would be rich and live happily ever after going to swanky Space parties, expensive Moon resorts, and so forth.
The telling moment, imho, was when she 'Facetime' calls him after another nightmare and he answers the phone and is surprised to see her, but then looks behind him at someone (I'd bet that it's that night's hookup (likely some bimbo easily impressed with him flashing money around or being wined-and-dined) and he's looking to make sure she's still asleep so Ripley doesn't hear/see her) and then continues talking even closer to the screen, as if he's trying to block something.
Hmmm...
Also he was keeping tabs on her - reading the reports for her mandatory therapy sessions (aren't those supposed to be confidential? Not for sneaky peaky Burke, I guess!) and knowing where she was at all times, etc.
Creeeeeepy!
Just adds another layer to his all-around sleaziness if one imagines that Burke is deluded enough to think he stands a chance at getting Ripley in his bed! Ha!
Great character though! I hated his annoying character on "Mad About You" (and hated the show in general), but absolutely loooove him as Burke!
He played the slimeball corporate yuppie character to a T!
Definitely a character that even many (many!) viewings and years later, I still love to hate!
But yeah - I think his rose-colored glasses seriously misjudged Ripley and he thought she was some traumatized D.I.D. (damsel in distress) that he could easily impress once he seduced her with his talk of money and 'we'll be set up for life' promises.
Ripley is one lady that cannot be sweet-talked or bought, if anything that just pisses her off more and makes her slam you into a wall! Atta girl!
