The inept Lt. led them to their deaths. Ripley had to take initiative to rescue to hostages.

I always think that in Alien, Aliens and Alien 3, Ripley is a Cassandra figure, prophesising danger and only putting herself in the firing line when absolutely necessary. In Alien 3 she is also the bringer of doom itself. Her survival results in others deaths.
In Aliens she does firmly say that the alien wiped out her crew but, once she realises that the marines are fearless, it's as if she's implicitly like 'OK, you go ahead. I'll just, er, watch from afar and try to reason with a foolhardy leader'. Although they did have to check if any colonists could be saved.
she also made them take their ammo out cause she mentioned the reactor.. she shoulda kept her mouth shut about the reactor
