It holds up

A few Fridays back, a friend of mine phoned me with the sad news that she had broken up with her boyfriend of over two years. They cared very much for each other, and still did even after the break-up. But the problem was they just couldn't take it to the next level of living together and then marriage.

Although the news that they decided to part ways was sad, it wasn't unexpected. My friend and her guy had been having problems for a while leading up to the break-up. Still, she was hurting badly, and it pained me to know the wound was still so raw for her.

She told me she planned on spending the weekend taking care of herself, ordering dinner in, and renting a few movies...you know, giving herself some private time to heal. I found myself recommending she rent a 20 year old film "About Last Night." A couple weeks before this conversation, I caught the movie on cable. I had almost forgotten about this fine little film, and it really holds up. To me, it was as enjoyable in 2007 as it was back in 1986 when I watched it for the first time. Sure, some peripheral matters such as the clothing and hairstyles were dated. But the scenarios, conversations, and problems are absolutely timeless - as relevant today as they were over two decades ago.

The movie reminded me of what my friend was going through, what I had gone through before I got married, in short, what we all experience in relationships. You could make this movie today with all new actors, and without changing much, it would be great.

If you haven't seen "About Last Night" for yourself, rent it next chance you get. If you have seen it, watch it again.

Interesting post, which also hits very close to home.

I've loved this movie since the first time I watched back in '86. I initially saw it because I thought Demi Moore was incredibly beautiful. But ended up just enjoying it because of the story.

My point to this post was to say that after my separation (and later divorce), just like your friend, I needed and wanted some taking care of me time. The very first thing I did, on my first Friday alone, was to buy "About Last Night".

What I saw them going through pretty much mirrored my own life at the time. That was over two years ago, and I've watched it at least 10 times since.

Great movie.

Ditto that my brother. Creed
