I was watching this movie last weekend and I happened to watch the credits. At the very end of the movie, Danny runs after Debbie who is riding her bicyle. As the credits roll, you can see Danny catching up to her and the distance between them close. Just before the scene freezes, he is with her and they appear to be talking. I can only guess this since you can still see the trees moving in the wind and then it freezes with them apparently together.
Does anyone think that this is intended to show that they got back together? Or, was it a sort of teaser to make the viewer wonder? Does anyone think that if the story was continued, they would have gotten back together.
I agree but who knows considering what happened to them before and especially Debbie's issues with Danny's lack of communication. I always wondered if the ending was also written that way to leave room for a sequel which obviously was never made.
How much clearer did they need to make it They both realized they were miserable without each other made plans go to "some old joint" and He ran after her like a bat out of hell while she was on the bike,, .....roll the John Waite song
by the way I cry everytime at the end..is that wrong???
I agree with your thoughts. I believe that Danny caught up to Debbie, then she probably invited him to the apartment. They kiss and make up and continue on to Danny's dream joint.
I too cry at the end. I tried to examine my feelings. I'm not sad, just happy that it looks like they will make up. I think I cry for the relief of it all. I felt really sad and cried for them when they were pouring their hearts out in the rain outside of Mothers on St. Patrick's Day.
I have to say that I absolutely love this movie. I watched it about 40+ times back in the summer of '87 and have recently bought the DVD. I like that Demi Moore isn't the Demi Moore of today - she is so believable as Debbie and I think she and Rob Low had such great chemistry...very believable as a couple. Anyway, I have studied the ending as well, and in my mind, he catches up and they are walking and talking...a segway to a new beginning for the two of them as a couple who finally make it because they are so drawn to each other and finally more mature to not let each other go again. At least, that's how it plays out for me :-)
I also loved this movie. I know Rob Lowe and Demi Moore dated in real life, which made their on screen chemistry incredible. I think they decided to reconcile when Debbie invited him out. Then she turned around and said "I can't believe we're doing this, why are we doing this?" So, I definitely think they got back together, if it lasted is up to our imaginations:-) I do believe that they were supposed to make a sequel a few years later, but it fell through. Most sequels stink, but this is one where I think it could have turned out really well.
Definitely suggested they reconciled. Although my guess is they did it right this time, not backwards. That was their problem: sleep together, move in, get to know each other. Supposed to be the other way around lol. So my guess is that, because Lowe had much to prove since he broke it off the first time, Moore probly dated him for several months, made sure he was for real, then attempted to move back in with him. Make sure his roving eye and "tied-down" apprehensions were gone. Hell, maybe even married him first, then moved in with him.
Sequel....ehhhh, I love the characters, but where would a sequel go? What made the film great was the make-up/break-up aspect. If they stayed together on their ho-hum way, not sure what they could explore. Except for having a kid, bickering over wedding plans *shrug*.
The ending reminded me of me and my current wife. We met right after I was separated from my now ex-wife with a divorce pending. It turned out that it was just too much too soon and I was ready or able to give her the kind of serious relationship that she wanted. So, we broke up.
A few months later, my divorce was granted and I was at the mall and ran into her. We talked and said hello and what was going on. I told her again that I was sorry for what happened as I just wasn't ready. I told her that it had to end before someone got really hurt. She asked if I was feeling better and I said yes. She asked if perhaps we could try again as she was thinking about me but just couldn't work up the courage to e-mail or call. I told her that we'd have dinner and see where we went from there.
The following night, we went out and the rest was history. We got married one year later. Perhaps Danny and Debbie did as well.
Did Rob and Demi really date? When? perhaps shortly? if I'm not wrong after her 1st marriage she started dating Emilio Estevez for about 4 years (til 1987) ...
However, believe it or not I watched this movie for the first time last weekend. I did not have big expectations considering I do not like romantic movies, neither the main actors ... and I was surprised how ejoyble it was, all dialogues, situations. And the end does not really leave much space to interpretations in my opinion, clearly they start dating all over again.
BUT, I don't believe they had learned much from their mistakes, in 2 minute conversation they seem quite rushing again, perhaps even faster than before: - when he asks her out she tells to have all weekend available and proposes immediately to go for dinner "this evening" - he suddenly runs fast like the wind to reach her as he could not wait the evening to see her So, my question is did they really learn anything? ;)
I have to say that I absolutely love this movie. I watched it about 40+ times back in the summer of '87
Ditto. My college friends and I used to quote the lines back and forth all the time. We even went to Chicago one year during Spring Break to track down some of the sites in the movie. We got about 4 inches of snow. We did find Mother's but were too young to get in. I wanted to track down the softball field, but we didn't have time.
I loved this movie back then. And it's still pretty good 21 years later.
Mother Malone's is on Division Street. They actually used a bar across the street from Mother's as well as another Mother's bar. But you can see where they filmed the street scenes on Division Street.
When he said something to the effect of "It's an old joint that's been remade" it always struck me as a metaphor for thier renewed relationship. Also, as Demi was walking away, she said something, jokingly, like "I can't believe we are doing this." That's when I knew they were getting back together.
Great, timeless movie.
Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle "Dixie"?
There actually was a sequel that was penned, but Elizabeth Perkins nixed it. In the sequel, her character was outed as a lesbian. I agree with everyone above, while the characters were very likeable, I just don't see where a sequel would of taken us.
Pull this leg and it plays jingle bells! Jim Belushi was awesome in this movie.
This is one of my all time favorite movies (as a Chicago gal, the location is added bonus - especially watching the Cubs from the rooftops!), with my all time favorite final scene. When Debbie says "Let's just go to some old joint," and Danny starts to trip over himself in explanation, the look that passes between them says it all...it puts me in tears every time...they definitely start on a new path together, with a better understanding of what it will take to make it...
I do also believe they are older and wiser and probably would make a more successful go of it. Besides they would know each other and themselves better. The bit about the old joint gives me the impression that she knows that Danny fixed up the joint where he took her on one of if not their first date. It also shows that they really do still feel for each other knowing how badly it went last time and they are still on good speaking terms and willing to go for it again or to consider such a prospect regardless. And it marks a new beginning because they meet again where they first met in exactly the same conditions with the same friends and seemingly both single. Proving that they were made for each other. A sequel could have been a disaster. But I think Dan and Debbie as they are now could be interestingly called "about this morning".
I was just walkin naked in a convent with my ghetto blaster as "Losing my religion "played on
i noticed at the end as well that it showed them in the distance but closely talking to each other - so yeah i think they got back together - also danny was much happier w/his life bc he got his dream diner - she was always telling him to go for his dream and he did so i think that was part of the problem danny was unhappy at work and hated his job; now he's got his diner and the women he is in love w/well i would say the "love of his life". i always wanted their friends to end up together - they would've been a hoot !! but imo they DID end up together - he lit up when he saw her riding her bike and couldn't keep his eyes off her and the same goes for her she was so happy to see him.. rob lowe and demi moore ARE gorgeous in this film - talk about a good-looking couple :) I love Rob Lowe- and I met him about 6 years in person, he was filming a movie down here in New Orleans- he is SO down to earth and he is still hot - also he is much better looking in real life, the screen doesn't do him justice cuz he's amazing looking, and he's older now - but he still GOT it !!i had pics of him all over my wall growing up and inside my locker at school :)
I think it's quite obvious that they get back together. Actually, I don't think Debbie really wanted to split up in the first place. If it was up to her, she would have been willing to keep trying to make it work. She was clearly in love with Danny. But it was Danny that instigated the break-up. In fact, when their romance started to hit the rocks, it was essentially Danny's fault. Here's my take on it:-
* Danny hated his job and hated his boss. It made him testy and he took out his frustrations on Debbie. On the other hand, Debbie had no issues in her job and if there were any pressures then she was capable of handling them, unlike Danny. * Danny was heavily influenced by Bernie and this made it difficult for him to commit fully to Debbie. Bernie was a brash, overbearing guy who frequently tried to pull Danny back into the lifestyle of partying and womanizing. Basically, Danny was a rather weak-willed guy who couldn't quite escape Bernie's clutches. Of course, Debbie had to deal with her best friend Joan, who was cynical and sneering towards her romance with Danny, but Debbie's will was stronger and she did not allow herself to be adversely influenced. * For Danny there was more adjusting towards commitment and actually living with Debbie. It's just the type of guy he was. For Debbie, she was more positive and flexible in making the romance work. Danny could make it work too but he may have needed a bit more time and as mentioned above, he was hampered and hounded by Bernie.
With Danny, it was a classic case of not knowing how precious something is until it's gone. He realized he'd made a big mistake by breaking up with Debbie and clearly wanted her back. He wouldn't make the same mistake again and he needed to convince Debbie of that.
At the end, both Joan and Bernie acknowledge that Danny and Debbie are right for each other and encourage their respective friends to make a move (Joan prompts Debbie to go talk to Danny and Bernie prompts Danny to abandon their ball game and go after her). Initially, Danny asks her to go out for dinner and she does not hesitate to accept. Then she says that her roommate is going away for the weekend (presumably the following weekend)and that she doesn't have any plans and suggests Chinese food, then switches her stance and says "even tonight...", which speeds things along rapidly. So there's no doubt that they're going to get back together.
Great post. I think another issue in their relationship was that they were still rather young adults. It was the first time that either of them had been involved in a relationship that got that serious. We’ve all been there and I am sure most of us thought we were ready for it when that first really serious relationship came along.
It’s only then that you realize that it’s not as easy as it seems and you have to work at it. That’s where things got complicated for Debbie and Danny. Pressure from their jealous friends didn’t help either.
I think Debbie was a bit more prepared and willing than Danny was. My interpretation is that Danny really didn’t know what to expect and seemed overwhelmed by it all once she moved in the excitement of being involved in a new relationship subsided. I completely agree that he only learned what he had once he lost Debbie.
Did they get back together? I think so as well. One would hope that they learned from their mistakes and were able to establish a much stronger relationship than the one that they had before. In any event, I thought this was a great way to end the film. We are left to wonder.
For me, it was clear that they got back together in the end. I never forgot what Demi's character said in the end "I can't believe we're doing this, why are we doing this?"
