Why did they have a woman playing a man pretending to be a woman?
Why didn't they just hire a man to play the man in drag??? It's so obvious it really is a woman.

shareIn which scene? In the scene where Mick meets Gwendoline, I could have gone either way on whether or not that was a man in drag. She looked very feminine at times, but also had a few somewhat masculine features. Turns out, Gwendoline was played by a woman. Later, at the party scene where Mick grabs Fran's crotch to make sure Fran is a man/woman, Fran is played by a female, though I would've sworn to you prior to looking at the credits that the character was played by a male. And after having viewed that scene between Mick and Fran, I'm still not sure what Mick found when grabbing Fran's crotch? Was Fran actually a man or a woman?
shareThe scene I was referring to was the one with Gwendolyn. To me, it was pretty clear she really was a she, not a man. I felt they just should have had a man play that part. Her voice was very feminine, not manly at all, but then when Mick grabs "her" crotch, they dubbed in a man going "Oh!" (I'm pretty sure they did, that's what it sounded like!) I'm just not sure why they did that. As far as Fran, I'm pretty sure Fran was a woman, although I too would've swore she was played by a man! (I have to wonder as well what Sue was doing at a party with coke-sniffers, prostitutes, etc!)

Based on the facial features of "Gwendolyn" you can pretty much guarantee that its a man. Some people have said "but she was actually a girl." I'm not buying that.
People who say this are probably going by the name of the actor in the closing credits to assert that the character was actually a women, yet that can still be off base as the person could be a hardcore transvestite, and obviously preferred to be named by her woman name, not her birth man name..who then plays a man dressing as a women...
I guess I'm going to have to be one of those people that disagree with you- I think his/her features are very feminine, and so is her voice. Does anyone know anything about this actor/actress? Her name is Anne Carlisle and she has a few credits on IMDB- Miami Vice, etc.

Looked like a man just before Mick grabbed the crotch. But the voice was definitely a woman's. Anyway, if he wanted to tell if it was a man, he could have just looked for an Adam's apple.

Its the opposite to Life of Brian where they had men playing women pretending to be men
shareI had Gwendoline pegged as a man immediately.

Gwendoline is played by Anne Carlisle. She is definitely female - she has acted in several roles, all female.

Fran is also played by a female actress. Her name is Anne Francine. She had all-female roles her entire career. (RIP) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0290022/
But I have to agree with the OP: Why did they hire a woman to play a man playing a woman?

Like a previous poster wrote check for an Adams apple, and sure enough Gwendolines got one. Change evreything you can that is the one thing they can't.
shareLOL "I'm a dude playin a dude disguised as another dude."
shareIt was an homage to Victor/Victoria.
But, seriously, not obvious. I thought it was a man right from the start.
I'm very surprised that it was a woman actress.
