-Siskel & Ebert -Ebert & Roeper -Roeper & Phillips (they were never official but they did it enough times to get a rapport going) -Lyons & Manciweicz -Scott & Philipps
The best pair was the original Siskel and Ebert. Then Ebert with Richard Roeper. Then you have Roeper with Phillips, which they should've done in 2008. The others didn't work.
Of course the original pair were the best, if age and illness hadn't crept up on them they would still be popular and still on TV today.
1. Siskel and Ebert 2. Ebert & Roeper - I think Roeper did a very good job esp. considering he had to replace the great Gene Siskel. He knew how to create enough tension to keep the show interesting, he knew how to push Roger to the edge before reeling it back in. Roger gets enormous credit by taking it all in stride. 3. Tie: Roeper & Phillips or Scott & Phillips - These guys are good enough to keep the show watchable in my book. I really liked Wilonsky too, I was surprised he didn't get a permanent seat. 4. Lyons & Manciweicz - Lyons was the mistake here, not only was he bad but he seemingly was a sell out. I think Manciweicz did a great job under these circumstances. He certainly seemed to take the job seriously, he did his homework and the effort was there. He was not afraid to go against the grain, I appreciated his explanation of why he didn't like The Dark Knight.
Anyway, as you can see I think the only bad choice was Lyons. I think most people agree with this. If I had my choice to pair any of the critics above I'd pick Scott and Manciweicz or Wilonsky & either Scott or Manciweicz.
Hopefully in a few weeks a new show will pop up, life would suck without a good movie review show.
1. Siskel and Ebert: Original and still the best! 2. Ebert and Roeper: At first, I resented Richard, but in the later episodes he was good. Plus it's tough to replace Gene Siskel. 3. Roeper and Phillips: They should have stayed longer than they were allowed, but due to the new direction of the show, Richard left. 4. Phillips and Scott: A GIANTIC improvement over the last At the Movies duo, but there's something missing between the two former Roeper sidekicks.
5. Lyons and Manciweicz: Ben Manciweicz is pretty good, but Ben Lyons really ruined the whole concept of the show for me. I'd rather see average but personality-filled critics discussing movies rather than pretty boy Lyons telling what movies I should see or not!
I think what was missing with scott and Phillips was some chemistry and energy. They brought more of it to the last episode. I thought they were too calm and never got into huge fights like Siskel adn ebert did.
