Please tell me I'm not the only one who hates Slimer

How many times did the guys try to talk Peter out of zapping Slimer, saying "he'll get better"?

reply

I don't think the writers like JMS found him enjoyable either...

reply

I don't hate Slimer but I do agree with JMS when he said that Slimer works best in small doses, one quick appearance per episode is fine.

When they started making episodes centered around him and about how awesome he is and how us kids (at the time) should love him is where he got annoying real fast.

I like Slimer, but he definitely was better early on, when he only really appeared in the firehouse. It was also more funny when his "speech" only consisted on incomprehensible garble.

When they started giving him more screentime, making him speak English, & turned it into "Slimer & The Real Ghostbusters," I still enjoy it, but it tended to be more along the lines of Scooby Doo than what we saw previously.

reply

I agree with you on that.

reply

I liked it better in the first 2 seasons. Actually one of my favorite episodes Ghostbuster of the year doesn't have Slimer in it at all.

I don't hate Slimer, but he works best when the plot isn't centered around him.

Unfortunately, the network episodes this show suffered from a lot of executive meddling which mostly got worse as the show went on. JMS talked about it quite a bit in the commentary on the box set. The network execs actually forced them to include Slimer in every episode. That's why we got later seasons that consisted of two 15 minute dumbed down episodes with two of the Ghostbusters and Slimer, along with a Slimer! episode.

The writers generally preferred working on the syndicated episodes because there weren't nearly as many stupid rules, but the pay was better on the network episodes because the budgets were higher.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The network execs apparently NEVER heard this saying. The first two seasons of the show (the first 13 ABC eps and the 65 syndicated eps) were for the most part solid. Then they had to shake things up by changing Peter and Janine's voices and overhauling Janine, Ray's and Slimer's designs. And let's not even get into the forced addition of the 'Jr. Ghostbusters'.

Weren't the Junior Ghostbusters added in Season 2 syndicated episodes?

reply

No, they were exclusive to the ABC episodes, and even then they only made maybe about two or three appearances. J. Michael Stracynski hate, hate, HATED the Jr. Ghostbusters and refused to use them outside of their few S2 appearances (He was quoted as saying he'd only use them if he got to toss them in front of a bus). After the ABC S2 appearances, they were strictly confined to the 'Slimer' shorts and were never seen in the regular episodes again.

I watched the syndicated episodes as a kid, never really watched S&TRG, and I thought Slimer was pretty harmless. He just seemed like a mascot and it probably helped that I loved Hi-C Ecto Cooler. I remember I'd watch the movies wondering why Slimer wasn't their pet like in the cartoon. Now when I watch the show and since I have the knowledge of how the show degraded after Slimer became a main focus, I can't stand him too much. He had his moments in some older episodes but he's not what brings anyone to the show.

They never do...

reply

I remember when I was a kid I'd get excited when the Ghostbusters came on and horribly disappointing with the "SLIMER and..." tag came up instead of just "The Real Ghostbusters."

They turned him from an occasionally funny sidekick into an intolerable Scrappy character and let him take over the show.

That's what happens when you call in "consultants" who thought they knew what kids wanted. I was a kid at the time. And I usually turned the show off during the later seasons.

Watching today, some of the later ones are decent especially when JMS tried to clean up some of the mess but it was too little, too late. Nothing touches the syndication episodes though.

reply

That is why I liked syndicated episodes, they kept the slimer appearances to a minimum. Sometimes he was not in them at all. I was always rooting for Dr Venkmen to put him in the containment unit.

Another favorite episode without Slimer is Drool the Dogfaced Goblin. I loved it when the shape changer turned into a giant cockroach scaring the crap out of Peter. It's too bad the later seasons couldn't give us something as scary as a giant cockroach.

I never cared for Slimer either. Even in small doses he wasn't that funny.

I love Slimer.

Did anyone notice how Peter treats Slimer nicely in the later episodes? So out of character.

That was later though when Slimer became a main character and Dave Coullier took over. Guess the execs didn't want to keep the Peter hating Slimer theme when they decided to make him a main character.

Slimer is a hit and miss character for me, at times I find him to be cute but in others I find him to be annoying, there was one of my favorite moments in the Real Ghostbusters where Slimer gets angry at Victor to where he started choking him in "Victor The Happy Ghost".
