I decided to open my Fright Features Peter Venkman.

For some reason, it feels a bit sticky, especially the hair. Has anyone else ever encountered this with mint in box vintage figures? The hair and boots also seem to have a rubbery feel, while I remember the figure being entirely plastic(not counting any of the internal parts).

reply

Yeah, plastic is typically petroleum based, and it can react strangely to its environment over time. Even though yours was still in its bubble and attached to its card, it was still interacting with the acid in the paper of the card back, the petrochemicals in the bubble, any direct light it may have encountered, and those bubbles tend to come loose over time, so air and dust likely got in there as well.

She-it! Makes you wonder how authentic the ones are that get sold "MOC" or "MIB" . I have to check my original figures which are outside in the garage.

reply

Authentic in what sense? That they're not bootlegs or that they were never opened?

reply

Bootleg?!

You mean my "Authentic Pieter Venkmen" action figure may be a knock-off?!!

I miss my ghostbusters toys!

I still have all my hero figures. Except the Ecto Glow series

THis happens to loose ones too. This is easily remedied. Get a bottle of Goo Gone abd spray the figure with it. (preferably outside) Leave sit for 5 minutes, then wipe clean with a white cloth. Rinse under the tap with water and dry

I tried this last year with my Bill and Ted figures and it worked fine. No paint loss

reply

My only question would be: How could you bring yourself to open it???

reply

Easy, I don't collect things to keep them boxed up. I'd rather be able to hold it in my hand than be eternally separated by a thin layer of plastic and cardboard. However, if I hadn't opened it, I never would have been aware of the decomposition of the plastic so that would have been one plus.

I never had issue with mine though I'm not sure I even still have them. I think my parents may've stored them in either the basement or attic. I could've sworn they were in my room upstairs as of a few years ago. But not anymore.
