Were there any ghosts in the containment unit in the years/months before caught the Scoleri brothers?
It would be risky to have any ghosts in there, and not have it guarded.
I guess Ray and Egon could have checked in on the containment unit from time to time.
I always thought there were suddenly so many ghost sightings around that time due to some converging cosmic/spiritual energy, and after the defeat of Boxer things went back to being relatively quiet. That's why the Ghostbusters were relegated to doing kid's parties to make a living. The ghosts either crossed over or went dormant/laid low. GB2 had the Scoleri bros, but all the other events in the movie were directly related to the slime/Viggo.
