Well, as Ben himself has stated about the fee "It's how I make my living, and I'm not ashamed of it", nor should he be. It's the American dream to make as much $$$ as you can. Besides, you figure he still has to pay his other attorney associates as well as P.I.'s for working on the cases with him.
Besides, and I'm not sure how many eps of the series you've seen, but quite often throughout it's run he's taken cases either for a reduced fee or no fee at all. Unlike when high profile lawyers do the same today, it wasn't for publicity purposes.
