I remember this show and it was briefly on. Lucy did not have the timing she used to have. Her lines and comedy were off. Gale Gordon, however, still had his timing down to a science. It was sad to me to see that Lucy had lost her timing because she and Gale Gordon used to have the greatest exchanges on their show together.
There is nothing wrong with an 80-year-old woman doing slapstick or any kind of comedy if she still has the timing. Lucy did not have that timing still. It sounds like either you did not see the show or you don't remember it and its content. The general complaint was that she had lost it and that is one of the main reasons it did not survive beyond a few episodes. Look it up.
Just how does one have "timing" when there are NO gags in the script? The LIFE WITH LUCY scripts were awful, plain and simple, there was nothing Lucy could have done with them - or anybody. Had Lucy had good material she still probably could have delivered.
Re Gale Gordon, I don't know what you saw in his performance in LWL but honestly he was a one-note comedian even as early as THE LUCY SHOW. His idea of funny was to scream his lines. I would go as far as to say he's the main reason the post-ILL Lucy sitcoms aren't that good. He might have been ok as a semi-regular like Mary Jane Croft, but not that scthick every episode.
