Parts of this show were kinda racist.

Jericha seemed to just assume Shana and Anthony would be a perfect match because they're both black. Other than that and the extremely repetitive lyrics in the songs, this show was pretty damn good.

"There is no escape, John!"

reply

Well to be fair whenever 2 black people interact someone will always say they look good together. it's the same when two white people talk for little bit, and it happens all the time today

That's funny; I often think the same thing about people who are different races ... or ethnic backgrounds if you want to get "politically correct" (in a few years, there will probably be a new preferred term anyway).

"There is no escape, John!"

No. I said often, not always.

"There is no escape, John!"

But that's not what I asked. Why do often think two people are perfect for each other just because they're talking? Sorry, I just don't get that.

Sorry honey but communication is key for a relationship, what do you want, two people to jump into bed and call it a marriage, get out of here. Maybe in your world but sex can only get you so far.

Honey, you must not know how REAL relationships work. Communication is the key to EVERY relationship not just romantic ones. Also, you don't just jump into bed with anyone you have good conversation with. That's not how it works ...you think anyone who talks to each other automatically makes them a good couple? That makes little to no sense. Or maybe you want to be a relationship with anyone who acknowledge your existence. If that is the case then that is your problem.

Honey Don't twist my words...You just took what i wrote and re-hashed it. I posted that YOU were the one who was thinking sex was the only important thing not me, I KNOW that communication is everything, and i wasn't the one saying anyone who just strikes up a conversation means a good relationship.

What i meant was some people are simple minded. When they see two people of same race, who are young and single like in the case of this show (its nearly 30 years ago) people automatically think to lump them together. That isn't my opinion, it's just how things probably were back then. And today people still do that.

It's mostly because people of the same race tend to have more in common and can relate to each other more. Interracial relationships may be the happening thing now but it wasn't back in the day. Shoot back then, whites didn't even want our videos played on their channel and billboard had our music listed under the 'Black Singles' chart. We were more segregated at that time and in the nineties as well so we stuck together more back then.

There's a lot of racial mixing going on now so I guess can see how Jem hooking Shana up with Anthony would look racist to the younger crowd.

reply

Good grief...some people see racism in their fVcking breakfast cereal. Please go pour yourself a bowl of something better to do and chow down.

Jeez.

Anthony made the first move on Shana before Jem/Jerrica said anything. She just encouraged Shana because, well, he was a rich, handsome guy who was interested.

[deleted]

I'm shaking my head because I agree with MrBlondNYC. Is that a problem?

reply

It had nothing to do with skin color. Anthony was quickly smitten with Shana, and Jerrica told Shana to go with it because: 1. Anthony was a really nice guy, and 2. Shana is such a shy person that if Jerrica hadn't given her encouragement she wouldn't have gone for it.

Seriously. Anthony and Shana were by far the most stable couple on the show. Don't be making an issue out of nothing.

reply

[deleted]

They have similar personalities. Both Anthony and Shana were soft-spoken characters who were both mature and very caring. They were there to support each other in rough times, as shown when Shana quit the band temporarily.

But if you have a problem with people seeing each other and "BAM", they're a couple, then you obviously have a problem with most every couple on the show. Because this pretty much describes Aja/Craig, Stormer/Angus, Danse/Stefan, and Kimber/every boyfriend she had on the show. It's not just Shana and Anthony who got together quickly.

So really, you are making an issue out of nothing.

reply

[deleted]

Anthony and Shana didn't magically get together either. We don't see them have an intimate moment in the same episode where they meet. It's several episodes later.

But I can tell that you've already made up your mind that the show pairing Anthony and Shana up is racist, and nothing I say will make you change your mind.

They do not kiss when they first meet and I believe I said that he "was interested in her" which is something that would attract a woman. And they are in show business so, yeah, money and looks have a lot to do with it.

They do not cuddle either. He does touch her face. She was sad about something and touches her face to reassure her and says something like "Don't worry. It will be OK". Then, they look at each other for a bit.

If you're arguing that the only reason that they were together is because they were black, then wouldn't that make them extremely shallow? Now, you're arguing that they're not shallow. Which is it? If you want to put reality into this, then please cite an example of a grand romance between a pop star and her producer.

The theme song goes "Glamour and glitter/Fashion and fame". That's what the show was about. It was cartoon about a pop band whose lead singer is a hologram. This wasn't exactly The English Patient over here.

The episodes in the first season were seven minutes so the stories had to move quickly. They're edited together into half hours on the DVDs.

reply

You're correct, MrBlondNYC. Episodes one through eight was actually a movie. Episodes one through five was split into seven minutes per week in a Sunday line up. That is why they had to move it along quickly.

It is a bit embarrassing to see Jem practically shove Shana into Anothony's arms, but it's more something to laugh about rather than get upset over.

reply

I'm not upset ... just disappointed...

reply

But of course if they hooked her up with a white character people will be whining then as well. Just look at how much whining there is about pairing black characters up with white ones on shows now?

reply

*beep* would have hit the fan back then, had that happened.

reply

If this show was racist then some of the other pairings such as Jerrica/rio (hispanic possibly) and Craig/Aja (Asian) wouldn't have happened.

My guardian diety is a planet with the sea of sand, the soldier of embrace, Sailor Neptune!

reply

Pacheco can be a Portuguese name. If Rio's Portuguese(or a Spaniard), then he'd be considered white. Craig and Aja, though, are no doubt an interracial couple.

reply

Rio was definitely envisioned as Latino, not Portugese or a Spaniard. Even his skin tone reflected this, although he was sometimes erroneously animated as "white" (as was Raya).

reply

Raya usually had a darker skin tone then Rio did (when the animators didn't screw up)

My guardian diety is a planet with the sea of sand, the soldier of embrace, Sailor Neptune!

reply

Rio's skin tone was lightened as the series went on - to the point where he practically looked white, as we got into the middle of the series, but if you watch the earliest episodes, his skin tone is unmistakably indicative of him being Latino. That's how the character was conceived. It's very sad that the animators chose to just IGNORE that as time went on. Now THAT might be called "racist".

reply

I apologize if what I said came out wrong I was just pointing it out about Rio and Raya

My guardian diety is a planet with the sea of sand, the soldier of embrace, Sailor Neptune!

reply

Awwwww, sorry I wasn't saying YOU were racist - I was referring to the animators. You're all good, my friend. You have nothing to apologize for. 
