Looking back, would have loved more Aja and less Kimber

My favourite character in Jem is, and always has been, Jem herself. By far. No comparison.

Second would be Jerrica, her alter ego.

But among the rest of the cast, my third-favourite would definitely be Aja. What a pity that of all of the Holograms, she had the least screen time, and never really got an episode of her own.

I LOVE the fact that, at the very least, she was involved in one bona fide romance -- with Stormer's brother. (That's actually rather funny, in a way, because all three have blue hair. I suppose this was a Jem in-joke, that all the blue-haired characters would be related to each other or attracted to each other.)

By contrast, the series gives Kimber way, WAY too much screen time. She's a whiny, self-centred brat. I do like her more than Shana and Raya (because Raya proved ultimately to be completely useless), but still, I would have loved to have seen more of Aja. She was the second-prettiest Hologram, after Jem/Jerrica herself, and also the second-most interesting.

Yeah, it is odd that Aja never got any real focus when all the Holograms got focus episodes (even Raya's first two episodes were all about her).

And while I like Raya, yeah, I kind of agree about her not really being important after The Talent Search, and never really developed her own personality. I hope the IDW comics fixes that if and when she's brought in.

If you want to see Aja get some good development, read the IDW comic that's out now. It's only 8 issues in and it's given great characterization to not only Jem's band, but the Misfits as well.

Thank you for the tip, but I won't be reading it. I've heard that it has modernized the characters in various ways that I don't want to get into. For me, the animated series is the only real series. Everything else is, well, just fan fiction. It's not genuine.

Well, yeah, it's modernized the characters for the current day, but the only REAL major change to the characters is that Kimber & Stormer are now a couple.

The only other real change they've made is that now not all of the characters are stick figure models, as now some of the band members are now full figured women, on top of Jetta being African British (just how Christy Marx originally intended).

But other than these modifications, the characters are still pretty much exactly who they were in the original series. Personally, I love the new Techrat and this Pizazz, while still a spoiled brat, comes across as someone who actually loves what she does, and wants to put out good music and give the fans what they've come to see.

There are two scenes with her that really stand out, one where after the Battle of the Bands is cancelled she says they're going to do extra performances for the fans since they came to see a show, and the second is from the last issue where her and Stormer get into a heated argument over a song, and Pizazz, and this really shocked me, actually came across as understanding and not raising her voice when she tells Stormer that the song doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. She actually lays down her argument convincingly without being a brat about it.

But if you don't want to read the comic, that's your decision. But at least it's not the crapfest that we're getting in theaters.
