So he gets super jealous whenever another guy hits on Jem and blames her for it yet he's practically two-timing Jerrica. And yeah they're technically the same person but he doesn't know that and yeah he is hesitant at first but he openly kisses/engages in romance with both.
I thought I was the only one who thought Rio was an immature, self-righteous a$$. He was always getting jealous over Jem, never mind Jerrica is his girlfriend.
The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated.
Jerrica's the real *beep* So many times she sets up a situation putting Rio on the spot about it, but she's the one orchestrating the whole thing, not just that, but at least Rio is interested in the same woman whether he knows it or not. Jerrica compares Rio's interest in her and Jem as her interest in Riot, which is of course, a real person, and a self absorbed, unapologetic prick.
Rio saves the day, all day, every day, and always cares.
Can't believe the series ended without her ever telling Rio.
Jerrica has her own issues, but that doesn't absolve Rio of his. As far he knew, he was involved with 2 different women and though that was ok. What's worse is that he was extremely judgemental of anyone else for dishonesty, and he was super jealous when he had no right to be. He was a tool.
Jerrica, on the other hand is a liar and a wimp for never telling the truth, regardless of the consequences. She was also a sucker for putting up with Rio's crap.
It's a messy situation. Technically Rio is responding to the same woman. She's using her wiles to 'seduce' him from herself. Which in turn sets up a dangerous mental conflict within Rio.
She's setting him up, yet he's responding. But he's responding to her. It's quite complicated.
It's kind of like the standard Superman/Lois Lane/Clark Kent 'love triangle'. Lois doesn't know that Superman and Clark are the same person, and as such, responds to different cues from each. In most versions, it comes down to Kal-El to resolve the situation by revealing the double personas, and taking the chance that Lois won't leave him for it.
Ultimately, we never saw Jerrica get to the point where she was willing to allow the chips to fall where they may. She felt that she still needed 'Jem', and she also still wanted Rio.
It's an extremely complex dynamic for a 'children's cartoon'. To this day.
Everyone keeps saying that, but as Synergy said towards the end of the series, no matter what disguise Jerrica adopted, Rio always fell for HER - he never fell for any other woman on the show, even though people like Pizzazz and Minx tried to seduce him repeatedly. Jem on the other hand fell for Riot, while supposedly loving Rio, and also flirted with a number of other guys over the course of the show. Her moral culpability was *FAR GREATER* than Rio's.
I really don't see how that makes a difference, and I kind of hated that they put out that lame excuse. To me, it doesn't matter if it's the same woman because he didn't know that. As far as he knew, he was seeing 2 different women. The fact that he thought it was ok to do that is what makes him a jerk, IMO.
The IDW comics treat Rio much better. He's more of a down to Earth character, who currently has zero interest in Jem while dating Jerrica. He actually finds Jem as a selfish brat who's never around to help the Holograms when they're all the heavy lifting of setting up their shows.
I honestly don't think it's a lame excuse. It's complicated psychology. It comes across to some as Rio being faithless on the surface, but we NEVER see him hitting on ANY other woman, or responding to ANY other woman, unlike Jem/Jerrica who hit on/flirted with MULTIPLE OTHER MEN over the course of the series. The real jerk is JERRICA, not Rio, in my opinion. Or at least, Jerrica is the MUCH BIGGER jerk. lol.
Well said. He's one of my least favorite characters on the show. I even like Riot better than him. Not to say Riot is a great guy because he's way too egotistical and arrogant for my taste, but at least he doesn't pretend to be better than what he is. Rio, on the other hand, is always up on his high horse judging people for being dishonest, while he openly cheats on Jerrica. It always irked me that the show glossed over his cheating since Jerrica and Jem are the same person, but Rio never knew that. As far as he was concerned, he was romancing 2 different women. Yuck!
You can't "openly" cheat on anyone, of course, since cheating by definition means that you're doing something dishonest in secret. As I said in another post, Christy Marx didn't intend for them to be the exclusive couple that some writers may have portrayed them to be. Like you said, EVERYONE knew about Rio "romancing 2 different women" - except they were actually the same woman, whereas JEM/JERRICA romanced at least 2 men who were ACTUALLY DIFFERENT men, in addition to flirting with other guys over the course of the show. I find Jerrica's/Jem's behaviour yuckier, even though I understand where you're coming from.
