does anyone know what the black flower in the final episode was?
was it even a real flower? was it a type of gentian or something?

That black flower is called "Mugwort". It seems to thrive in (radioactive?) wastelands, and the Ukranian name for this plantspecies is...Chernobyl!

I've heard of daisyworld, but hadn't heard of mugwort, thanks. Just as a point of interest - after a little research there are no true black flowers, but the black bat flower comes pretty close!
