Remake

Campbell personally told me tonight at a Q&A of Zorro that he is planning on redoing this as a feature

I don't think anyone other than Bob Peck (RIP) could possibly play Craven. I also think that the plot is slightly too ponderous for modern cinmea - don't get me wrong, I think the pace of edge of darkness is perfect - I just don't see movie execs today agreeing with me, it takes place over hours and hours because it needs to, how would it be made as a feature?.

Who else would play Jedburgh? again, they nailed the casting with Joe Don Baker.

Would the remake be set in more modern times? I hope they don't try to involve terrorists, the post-cold-war era with all the tension over nuclear power and the labour unions made the perfect setting.

argh! they can't remake edge of darness! just put the repeats on bbc 1 in a prime time slot!

[edit] - when you say 'feature' do you mean a film?

reply

Who else would play Jedburgh?

Philip Seymour Hoffman, perhaps. But I agree, remaking this series in any form is a monstrously bad idea.

I think we're the green thingy.

reply

Bruce Willis would play Craven,

Winona Ryder his daughter,

Maybe get Hugh Grant to do some character acting and play Jedburgh.

Sound bad?

So does a remake...

reply

Haha no - the remake is going ahead. Campbell will direct with none other than Mel Gibson starring. Read the following link for more info.

I think this sounds like an interesting story for Gibson to get into after so long away from the scene.

Oh gee :(

Remaking this is a completely sh itful idea. Of course we'll have to bung in some post-9/11 terrorist threat references like everything else going. Utter crap. The original production is superb. Peck and Don Baker were great because they weren't marquee names to begin with. Gave more resonance to the characters.

Good God, no! First 'State of Play' and now this! Then to top it all off Mel Gibson is the choice star for Craven . . . I don't know why I'm so annoyed, I just won't watch it, it'll probably forever tarnish my DVD.

A remake is just pointless (and stupid). This series is wonderful and original and unique as it is..I don't understand why Hollywood insists on redoing films that are already of high-quality and, in this case, from Mel Gibson playing Craven to all the great secondary characters, none of the actors and none of this "remake" will compare or come close to the original series.

Just not a good idea, and what a waste of money. I'll stick with the original.

Oh come on, while I agree this doesn't need a remake, lets not abandon the ship before it's sinking, worse than bloody rats!

Obviously Mel and the late great Bob Peck are quite different actors, and due to the the 2 hour time slot it's going to have a very different feeling. It has the same director, which is a bloody good start - I trust he won't try to lever vacuous terrorist themes into it. And who knows - maybe Joe Don Baker will return?

I'd rather be optimistic about this, if the film is even half as good as the series it will still be incredible.

Anyone know if it's still going to take place in the UK? Or be transferred to America or elsewhere?

Oh no they shouldn't reamake this, I honestly think no one could do the role of Ron Craven better than Bob Peck.. He really did wonderfully in this and simply remaking this would be an insult to his hard work.. They should just leave well enough alone...

RIP
Bob Peck!! :-(

NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 This will overshadow Bob Peck's greatest work. Everyone will remember the awful remake, not this great masterpeice :( And Mr. Peck will be forgotten in time...

Poor Bob if he was still alive I'm sure he'd be pissed too.. :(

I hope the movie does go under..

EOD is my favourite TV movie ever. It was very much of its time and to fully appreciate it I believe you had to live in the UK as the time. The new version cannot hope to capture the atmosphere, but will presumably update the circumstances. Warning bells are already going off as Jedburgh is now a CIA officer sent to cover up the break in, he did not do that originally. It'll be dumbed down that's for sure, and it's a shame.

I saw it on swedish tv and I totally appreciated it, but I agree it catches the mood of those years to perfection (it was an age of suspicion and sensed double-crossing in Sweden too; the assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme in early 1986 - still unsolved today - plus a number of scandals triggered a stream of change and a feeling of society coming apart at the seams). It's the best political tv thriller of all time, period, and I can't see how it could be remade, certainly not as a movie or even a two-three part mini series. TV today is much more uniformly fast-paced and less atmospheric, more in-your-face.

The pacing - slow at first - is essential to the success because we are allowed time to get really close to the people and to feel Craven's grief and his change, and the many involved - but not improbable - turns of the plot.
