Happy ending?

Just seen Edge of Darkness. Excellent, but some questions.

1. Is it a happy ending? The American businessman dies and does not get the plutonium, and it appears that Craven will be with Emma although he is dying, too. However, the British company does get the plutonium, and they're the bad guys. Is it deliberately downbeat?

2. What is the British government/cabinet office's interest in the plutonium? The two civil servants work for the "Cabinet Office". As it seems that they are helping Craven and opposing the Northmoor businessmen, why does the government not take official action against Northmoor? Anyway, I found it hard to swallow that the government would oppose the nuclear companies anyway.

3. Whe doesn't the government do something when, at the inquest, the manager of Northmoor admits ordering the murders of the activists?

4. Why does Jedburgh infiltrate Northmoor? Because he thinks the CIA are ordering him? I realise that the CIA were in bed with the corporation and both were tricking Jedburgh, but I found it hard to believe that Jedburgh was that naive.

5. Who kills Emma's old boyfriend? I thought that the man spying on the boyfriend was a British policeman/spy. In which case, why don't the British authorities respond to this?

6. On what other levels can you interpret Edge of Darkness? What are the hints regarding the Knights of Saint John and paganism?

Would appreciate your input.
