Christmas Special

Hi,

Please can anyone provide a synopsis of the Christmas special where the Boswells went to Rome? I'd love to see that one again! Did that one have the original actors for Joey and Aveline (Gilly Coman and Peter Howitt) or was it the replacements?

Thanks

Hello yes Gilly and Peter were in that ep it was their last one also the last one for season 4 which is not on dvd. the dvd only go from season 1-3 even those it said season 4 also on season 4 Jack was not on the show and aslo you count how many eps
season 1 had 6ep
season 2 had 6ep
season 3 had 13 ep
season 4 had 13 ep 1 special when they went to rome
seaon 5 new cast jack is back had 13eps 1 special
season 6 10eps 1 special
season 7 10 eps

so I don't know why they say season 3 and 4 on the dvd when it's only season 3 I used to have the rome one but can't find it also I wish they would put season 4 on dvd and the rest of the seris season 4 and season 5 are my favorite the two I don't care for are season 2 and 7 I did like both Joey the first was cuter but to me the second one seem nicer I mean the frist one seem more like a father then a brother and the second one was more like a brother however I only liked the first Aveline I hated the second one I thought she was a big baby first she wantes a baby then when she get pregant she complain and she never even spend time with her daughter she alway made her mom and brothers take care of her or her husband all she thought about was herself I also hated Billy.
sorry so long.

Yes, that bugged me about Aveline. I had more of a fondness for the original Aveline - although she was appearance-obsessed, it wasn't her only characteristic. The second Aveline, aside from looking about ten years older than the first, was a much flatter character. They rarely repeat series 5-7 on UK Gold but I have seen them and - like you say - all I remember of the married Aveline was someone who whined when she was trying to get pregnant and who then whined about the impact on her body when she did get pregnant.

Something I remember from when she was pregnant, early on, was her complaining to Nellie that the changes in her body would ruin her chances of being a model or something similar and she did refer to considering an abortion, at which Nellie came down on her like a ton of bricks, not just because of being a Catholic but because she thought Aveline was being utterly ungrateful after wanting a baby for so long.

Since the brothers were always so protective of Aveline, and much was made of how she was special because she was a girl, I wonder if this set up a bit of a conflict for the character. She wanted to be the model, the attractive female, but I think she was also brought up to expect that marriage and a family were automatically part of her future.

Well thank-goodness Bread re-starts Tommorow on G.O.L.D at 7:40am and 3pm. I just hope the Rome one is re-shown as are Series 6 and 7 (so I can see the last Episode of 1990) for the first time in 18 years. Though sadly I hold out no hope for any of the Xmas specials from 1988, 1989 or 1990 being given an airing on G.O.L.D! Just as long as G.O.L.D do not pursue the terrible policy they seem to be adopting at the minute with Only Fools and Horses - yeah they are showing all Episodes but jumping from Series to Series - what good is that for fans of great comedy's like OFAH and Bread!!!!? Crazy is the best way to describe the idea!
