I remember the last episode (thanks to the repeats on UK Gold) because I'm sure Irene and Adrian were going off to get married, and Joey and Roxy met up with them either just after or just before they all got married, and then when Nellie found out (they all went back to the house to tell her) all hell broke loose.

I thought Joey was quite brave in a sense in the last episode - I suppose it was a bit mean of him to "leave" his mother but on the other hand I think she had a false vision of the family's future - she really thought she could make them all stay together as a family, and the reason I say Joey was brave in a way was, he was the one who had always stood by her, putting the family first, sorting out their problems (as Roxy had pointed out), almost taking on the role of the father and I think he finally realised that - if he was to have a life of his own - he had to, in some ways, break free from the family ties and possibly also try to show his mother that she had to stand on her own two feet.

Though it was excelent (but a sad end to Bread though) that Joey and Adrian got married - I doubt either Joey's or Adrian's marrage would of lasted. Joey marrying Roxy alway's seemed rushed I thought, as much as he loved her - he could never committ himself to Roxy and at times Roxy never seemed interested too, it seemed a tad fetched but in a way a logical ending.

Never thought of that, but you have a good point. Although Joey was clearly ready to break away from his tight-knit family by the end (given that he must have been in his late twenties or maybe even early thirties, with the other siblings being born somewhere over the following ten years or so?) I think you've hit on a possible problem with both relationships.

They were all too close to their mother, maybe it would have been just that bit too easy for them to have run back home when things got difficult. Most of them had only temporary employment and (aside of Adrian) I doubt any of them ever worked in a 9-5 job so they wouldn't have to deal with the going to work day in, day out whether they wanted to or not (which most of us have experienced) to a job they didn't particularly like but needed the money from.

They didn't have that sort of stability in life outside the family. So, having always had the security of home to go to when things got difficult - after she got married, Aveline was still always there moaning to her mother (it never seemed to occur to her that Oswald had feelings, for instance when she was desperate to have a baby), for instance - the obvious thing for all of them to do was to run back home.

I know Nellie wanted them around her because she resented Freddie leaving but she didn't do her children any favours by trying to keep them at home away from "the big, bad world".

On another point, regarding Joey and Roxy, she did once describe their relationship as "Hello, and straight into battle". Although I never really saw Joey as like that, it wouldn't make a good start for a marriage. Perhaps this is a weakness in the script - the character of Joey that is shown doesn't seem like the argumentative type, especially when he is the peacemaker at home.

Hi IridrescentTranquility,
I think the thing that continualy play's in my mind about Joey marrying Roxy was how it was all so rushed and not like Joey (this is difficult to grasp, but I guess he was driven to leacving in the way he did - thouugh to me that was not Joey at all. In regard to Adrian I just thought Ireene was not the correct choice for him to marry. Magdalana possibly would of been a better choice, even more so Leonora (if Leonora had choosen Adrian instead of Jack). Out of curiosity- hope you don't mind me asking, have you ever seen the last but 1 Episode from te 1991 Series?

GOLD is replaying Bread at the moment, looking forward tro seeing it.

Regarding Joey, he seems very different when Graham Bickley takes over from Peter Howitt as Joey, more argumentative and difficult, basically more like one of the kids, even though he's still in charge it seems less so than before.
