Greetings! (heheheh) I've watched "Bread" on and off for quite a while and it always makes me laugh. But I was wondering if anyone could tell me why they changed the actors who played: Joey, Aveline and Julie? And also I've just read that Jack isn't in series 6, does anyone know why? Thanks :)
Am I right in thinking Julie went abroad in series 2 and came back again as a different actress? I always thought they could have done with someone who looked closer to the original Aveline's age, as well. The original Aveline looked years younger than the second one.

I don't know if she went abroad, I just remember it was soon after she had the baby and went to London, then came back. Next I know it's a different actress playing her. Still must be difficult taking over from an actor who everyone is used to seeing.
Jack went to the US for series 6 and they replaced him with Shifty the cousin, but then he came back - and Shifty had to eat his meal over the sink. I think it's because the actor for Jack also did other comedy roles - he was on some sketch show, don't remember which one now, it was so long ago. Probably he had some other role and couldn't be available for that one year. Don't quote me on that though.
I agree about the much older actress for Aveline, plus her hair was darker, she spoke differently, everything about her was different. Ditto Joey - I always thought Peter Howitt was more sympathetic as Joey, Graham Bickley portrayed him as tougher, and wasn't as handsome either.
Peter Howitt has directed some movies now - Sliding Doors, Johnny English - and it was a shock to see pictures of him as a middle-aged guy. He's not that different from Joey, a bit stockier nowadays, but I guess that is to be expected. Still pretty good-looking in my opinion.
I would really like to know why the original Julie left, she was great she did not over act as the second one did, she was more real and it is a shame that she seems to have disappeared....
Caroline Milmoe left the show simply because she didn't want to do it anymore. The character of Julie was too important to the storyline to drop, so it had to be recast.
It is a shame that Caroline hasn't done a lot more on screen - she was very good.

I though that might be it but she was very good as Julie, she did not over act like the actor who took over from her, she really played well with the actor who played Billy, she calmed him down and allowed his overacting to be played down.
I agree it is a shame she was a great actress in Bread
I loved the priginal Julie, she was great, she actually loved Billie for all his faults, the second one didn't like billy as much as her voice was drowning.
wasn't the letter in the first episode of series 4? Other than that, they only mentioned Jack. He wasn't onscreen at all, including the wedding episode and the Holiday episode where they all went to Rome. So Vandiver27 is correct. He was not in series 4, even if they had his name in credits, but he was in series 6.
To answer the original question, because they left. Gilly Coman left because she had young children and wanted to spend more time with them. Peter Howitt left because he wanted to try something else. Graham Bickley sadly was not good as a replacement Joey; I think I only tolerated one series after he arrived.
Hi, I'm new here and a mega MEGA Bread fan. Graham Bickley's acting for me in the first few Episodes of the 1989 Series (his first)wasw downright terrible in 2 scenes I thought. How Joey said hi to that Hunter bloke who turned up telling him he wanted money for keeping shut about Adrian saving Lady Conort's handbag from the robber was worse terible acting, saying "hi to a guy likeHunter in such fashion was so un-true. Also I thought how Graham said in the Episode Jack returned "he was bowled over by Jack coming home" was a poor piece of acting. Though I suppose Graham was more or less instantly hit with a challenge (in the storyline)of the Tax debt was never going to be easy.
re Graham Bickley - you may note he only has 3 screen items to his credit. this is largely due to him being a stage/musical actor seen mostly in the West End since 1981.
I've seen him a number of times but the standout performance for me was with Petula Clark in Sunset Boulevard circa 1996. Talented talented actor whom wikipedia bizarrely say stopped working in 1991 - despite them then noting his various musical/stage performances after that date. Just because someone isn't on tv/film doesn't mean they stop acting......
