I have a few questions about this movie.

1. How much merchandise was made for this movie? I know there was a movie storybook, a novelization and the soundtrack on both vinyl and cassette. Was there anything else? Trading cards, t-shirts, other books, video games, etc?

2. Did the fact that this was a Steven Spielberg-produced fantasy film mean that there would be lots of merchandise made to tie-in with the film? I know there was a lot of merchandise made for “Gremlins”, “The Goonies”, “Back To The Future”, and since this was another Spielberg-produced fantasy adventure, I wonder if that meant there would also be a lot of merchandise made?

3. What age group was this film marketed towards? Was it pitched as a family-friendly film? Was it considered too scary for younger children, and aimed more at teens and adults?

Any insight to these questions would be appreciated. Thank you.

It was a kid movie/family movie. I don't know about any merchandising

Interesting questions about merchandise. Though, the only merchandise I can remember from the film is the novelization of the film, and that is because I bought it, and I still have it, even though it is boxed up and in storage along with most of my other books bought over the years.

I do remember that the novelization does go into greater detail than the film on several points. Among which is the villains' motivation.

If one can still find a copy of the novelization after all these years, it might be still worth checking out.

Yeah, honestly, I wasn't huge on movie merchandising at the time so I don't remember. But I know for sure that it wasn't like Star Wars or something where they'd have action figures.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

I think Willow had a lot more than YSH... probably because the studios didn't have a lot of faith in it to begin with so they didn't bother with trying to push it out the way they did on crap movies like Willow.

Related to the merchandise, I have attended many times Comic-cons and I do not remember to have seen anything about this movie.
I think, it is really a mix. Sometimes for kids or young adults, sometimes for adults.
