Stanley White

Stanley White is the technical adviser. Is any of the film based on real events or did they just use his name? Does anyone know anything more about the real Stanley White.

Trying to recall what I read in the (Bart Mills) Rourke Biography...

...I think the bio said the Daley novel's main character had a different name, and that Rourke got it changed in honour of their advisor.

...(Internet search)...Possibly true, he was originally 'Arthur Powers': http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/d/robert-daley/year-of-dragon.htm (may have changed in reprints, judging by a review at Amazon).

The only other thing I remember was Rourke saying he got the wrist grabbing technique from White (seen early in the film as he raids the gambling den), to stop people from going for weapons or fighting back.

Look out for my copy of the Bart Mills biography on ebay soon...$110!!! (that's what Homer Simpson would call buyer's remorse):

I doubt this is Stanley White (well, not the Stanley White): http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2007/05/04/2007-05-04_slay_trial_hangs_by_a_fingernail-1.html

This has to be one of the most underrated films at IMDB.

P.S. I didn't realise he had his own space here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0925469/...Don't understand why he's credited as an actor in a 1949 (British) film though ...Must be incorrect. Anyway, you can be the first to post on his message board Redchief, and you never know, the man himself might reply.

Goatlps, thank you very much for all that. I suppose it is feasible that he could have been in a film in 1949 but I really can't imagine it being with Max Bygraves (if you're not English you probably won't know him, but the thought of him appearing alongside hard-nosed cop Stanley White is laughable. Max Bygraves did the song I'm a Pink Toothbrush).
Good luck selling the book, although I think $110 is a little out of my price range.

Look for the real Stanley White walking right behind Rourke's Stanley White as he enters the soybean basement where they find the body. It's a funny shot because it's as if you're seeing double. The way Rourke wears his hat and his mannerisms came from White.

Stanley White also pops up in Cimino's Desperate Hours as a prison guard, whom Rourke kills.

Indeed Redchief, that thought alone is enough to be able to discount the info as false, it amused me greatly.

It's nice to hear your appreciation of my 'tit-bit' of White information, but I'll dig out the book and see what else I can find *...although why you had to be so callous as to remind me of that toothbrush song is beyond me!

I too would like to extend my thanks to Loaded Films, I wasn't aware of the man himself featuring in the film, I'll check it out (just watched it on Sky the other night).

Yes, I am English Redchief, I just put it in dollars because it sounds more impressive than £2.50, which is probably what it converts to thanks to America's multi-billion dollar war on international...goat herders!

* The (1988) book conveniently ends with Barfly, as did , dare I say it, his career. Although I would like to see his 'lost' film Francesco: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097383/
...PM me if anyone spots it on UK TV!

You can get Francesco on Amazon.co.uk for £1.06.

Apparently Rourke donated the money he made from the film to the IRA. I wonder how much semtex £1.06 buys? Good job he chose that film rather than 9 1/2 Weeks.

reply

Wasn't that for Prayer for the Dying (in which he plays a man in deep remorse for his terrorist acts)?

According to The Sun he single-handedly funded the IRA throughout the 80's, and sports a leopard tattoo on his shoulder, which is obviously a well-known symbol of the IRA (sarcasm).

...Mind you, Mickey's latter-day redundancy would explain the demise of the IRA.

Thanks for your link Redchief (Hope it's dubbed, reading subtitles is just reading, not watching). Shame it says I can only buy 1 copy, because as far as I recall, all the IRA ever did was knee-cap fellow gypoes. I try not to believe in stereotypes nowadays, but I make an exception for gypsies, since they are inherently evil scum-of-the-earth.

(...Did that sound angry enough? )
