definately.
i just got the dvd today and since i've seen the film a few times before so i immediantly put it on with the commentary and watched it from beginning to end. he talks more during the first half. and it is great stuff. like the previous poster mentioned. lots of good stories. i totally loved the part about him giving some nonactor a haircut and it made him that character. it sounds shallow to people who don't get it but a haircut can make such a difference.
a few times he sounds like a bitter old man "on thunderbolt they called me gay, on deer hunter: a rightwing facist, heaven's gate: a leftist marxist, and this film a racist. i can't be all these things!" but overall he's a very interesting guy. he' was VERY topical during the recording, talking about current events regarding his friends, oliver stone and clint eastwood. that's gonna make the commentary track kinda dated down the line. i would have liked him to talk about heaven's gate a little more. he didn't talk about it much, probably a touchy subject. anyway, definatley worth getting for fans of cimino. he's a real filmmaker.

Yeah, I'm very excited about this too. I've been looking for this film for a long time and to see a special edition of it is awesome. I'm interested in what Cimino has to say because he's such a hermit and you never hear about him any more. And Mickey Rourke is one of the best actors in the history of cinema. I can't wait.

Hey guys, is the commentary on the region 1 disc? Cos I rented a region 2 (I live in the UK) and there is no director's commentary.

Loved the movie, also a big fan of Rourke.

Just saw the new dvd version with Ciminos's commentary. All the praise noted in the posts above is richly deserved. The fact that Cimino hasnt been allowed to make a film in ten years while other directors who dont have half his talent continue making their "NOT SO SPECIAL EFFECTS" films is simply tragic. His star in 'YEAR OF THE DRAGON", Mickey Roarke, is on the comeback trail now with " SIN CITY" and the soon to be released "DOMINO". Lets hope that Cimino is given the opportunity to direct at least one more major budget film as well.

well, cimino comes off a little bitter or all too aware of his failings. ( "i don't feel bad about other people's success...i'm HAPPY for them") but it's a very good commentary.

Will this special edition dvd ever be available in Australia? If so, when?

The commentary sucks. All he talks about throughout the whole film is Asian gangs and Oliver Stone. I was very disappointed with his commentary. I like to hear stories about cast, crew etc. etc.

I had another listen to the first hour or so of his commentary. You missed parts of his commentary where he discusses John Lone, Ariane, Mickey Rourke, creating the Mott Street set, Stanley Kubrick's reaction when he discovered it was a set, working with the film crew in Thailand, and the casting of Steven Chen, who played Tony. There is also a nice story where one of the Asian actors revealed to the crew that the photo they had placed on the film set is actually his father. The crew, including Cimino, signed the photo, and gave it to him as a gift. He discussed this all within the first hour of the film. There is more to his commentary than just Asian gangs and Oliver Stone.

there's a sense of a failure in cimino's voice and words. like the elephant in the room that nobody mentions, his commentary...you get the sense that he's avoiding talking about his problems with film since then. he doesn't mention heaven's gate very much or his problems getting films going since then. he says his leading man was always his first choice then lists them and the films they starred in (eastwood in thunderbolt, deniro in deerhunter, kristofferson in heaven's gate, rourke in dragon, then says all the way to the sunchaser with woody harreson but skips mentioning the sicilian with christopher lambert...i doubt that was his first choice). he makes a point of saying he feels good for his friends success, without saying he's a failure. i feel bad for the guy.

reply

Well, I expect more out of a commentary. He went on for a long time about Asian gangs.

i really think you're overblowing that. he talked overlong about how awesome clint eastwood is then he did about asian gangs.

As The_Moviegeek notes the commentary does leave much to be desired.
Cimino spends far to little time giving technical details (the creation of Mott street is the only major bit) and describing the meaning of the scenes themselves. Both these things are definitely needed in a commentary.
Also he says absolutely nothing about the film's relationship to the book.
