Don't you think that this movie, The Year of the Dragon, is a real good cop Movie ?

Yes it's an inrecdible movie. Cimino really is one of the best directer's ever -a true master of film-making.

reply

Yes it is. Cop films don't come any better than Year of the dragon. I like that hat Stanley White (Rourke) wears in the movie, it's certainly a homage to the cop movies from the 40' and 50's.
I really love this movie!!!!

But does somebody know why the character of Rourke is called "Stanley White" in the movie but "Arthur Powers" in the Book of Robert Daley ?

Moreover in the book there are no references to the Vietnam war, I think that was the choice of Cimino to talk about vietnam.

reply

I beleive the reason, as far as I read, is because since Oliver Stone co-wrote the script, he based the character partially or took key elements (Stanley White) from a real life policeman he knows whose name is also Stanley White. As far as the references for Vietnam go, I would bet both of them wanted to use it in the film since Oliver Stone served in Vietnam himself during the late 1960's and Michael Cimino was also interested in Vietnam based from his experience in living through that era and also from making his film "The Deer Hunter".

Yes it is my favorite Micky Rourke movie and his best except for maybe Pope of Greenich Village.

Just watched it, and despite some minor flaws I was impressed. The violence is especially hard, forcing me to wake up and pay attention. Damn shame Cimino never took off, it's sad to think that one mistake (no matter how big) could crush a man's future so completely.

"Death to Videodrome! Long live the new flesh!"

Above average cop film, very intense focus on the other side, ie the Chinese Mafia and Triads. Very dark film, but detailed...

The finale on the docks is one of the best and most intense I've ever seen. By this point in the movie, Rourke has absolutely nothing to lose and John Lone is tired of being hounded by him. The performances from both actors are great. I actually crack up now (after seeing the film several times) when Rourke screams JOEY! JOEY! and Lone turns around in frustration and screams WHAT?! COME ON!!
A fantastic end.

"Give a guy a gun,he's Superman. Give him two and he's God."

My family went to go see this in the theaters when it came out and I thought it was excellent. This is John Lone at his best and Mickey Rourke in my mind was the essence of cool in this film. His whole attitude in this film left a vivid impression on me in high school and well into college. The ending on the docks is awesome.

I'm just bought the DVD when I was back in the States because I remembered this film and the DVD was only 6 bucks at Best Buy (and now I know why). I am sorry to disagree with everyone but I did not find much to like about this film. The writing was simply awful and Ariane was simply abominable. I love Mickey Rourke but this was NOT one of his best. I am not sure if it was his lines or his delivery. I thought that this was one bad movie in terms of script and acting. I got real tired, real fast of all the Vietnam comments as well. John Lone was the best part of the film, he too, like Mickey, is a very good actor!

I just watched Year of the Dragon again last night, what a great movie! Mickey Rourke of course is amazing and John Lone is magnificent. Even though John Lone played a gangster brilliantly, I found myself rooting for the good guy for a change, I related to Stanley White's attitude and the way he gets things done, like for instance, the scene where he just goes into the club and gives Joey Tai a good beating, I just really liked his character. Great directing and scriptwriting as well. 80s films were brilliant, why don't we have more movies like this these days?

i agree - this really is a great movie. for some reason (i guess thanks to some pressure from lobbying groups) this film never really got the reconition it deserved.
i really miss those films where the lead was a tough but flawed individual
