She Could Never Afford That Apartment
As a television news anchor there is no way she could afford an apartment that nice in NYC.
And I did not enjoy this movie- it is not a masterpiece it has many many flaws.

She says in 1 scene (talking of Johnny Tai) "Maybe he is just a successful businessman, like my father", so no, she's not paid for that on her salary. It is pretty usual in films and TV that people seem to live waaayyy above their means though.
No, it's not a masterpiece, it has many flaws, it still is a good film.

Very true.

Perfectly put.

It was an amazing piece of property. When I saw the view, I immediately wondered how much a place like that would go for in NY real estate.
And yeah, that 25 year old reporter didn't pay for that with her own salary. Daddy did. She said so herself.
Dalton and Craig! Accept NO substitutes!
I remember a special episode of Siskel and Ebert, which brought up the topic on how news reporters in films could afford lavish apartments. They showed the apartment clip from Year Of The Dragon, as well as a clip of Lois Lane's penthouse apartment from Superman: The Movie.
shareI bought this DVD just so I could goggle, awestruck, at that mind blowing loft. It must cost a million dollars a month. If it was real (it was a set).
shareNope. The apartment was shot on location. Cimino even fought with De Laurentis about it. Before the film crew showed up, however, it was abandoned and decrepit.
The realism of the apartment isn't important. It's what it represents in that context.
Yeah, in 1985 you're right. In 1985 it would have been unlikely, but today some high profile news anchors are so over paid that they could do so today.

Tracy Tzu is not only a television news reporter. But her daddy is also in international shipping. Daddy's little girl can afford anything she wants.
shareRemember that her dad was in international shipping. Tracy Tzu was a rich kid who went out to earn a living AND to cash in on dad's money. And she chose a profession that would feed her own egocentrism. I'm not saying that in a negative way. Many people have of their egocentric orientation. Tracy Tzu's needed public attention. But the apartment reflects her: sterile, cold, and isolated. She was so isolated that she couldn't even convince White that she actually had a boyfriend whom she spent the afternoon with. His initial jealousy disintegrated when he she realized she was lying through her probably-very-expensively-maintained teeth.
shareTracy's dad was also poor immigrant who came to America and became a success story when she and Stanley White were talking about how Joey Tai became a successful person.
What bother me is that Tracy Tzu apparently had no sense of history of how hard it was for Chinese Americans in America when she saw Stanley White having a whole bunch of Chinese American and Chinese history books and Stanley stated that no one wants to remember history and then she stated that Stanley sound a lot like her father and Stanley stated that her father sound like he was a wonderful guy.
Another thing that bother me is that she had no idea of what it is like being a poor person when she asks the question "Is Chinatown really that bad" and Captain White was running off the numbers on the sad, poor living conditions of Chinatown. At least White was doing his homework while reporters like Tracy don't do a good job of doing their homework, are too lazy to do their jobs, and/or their corporate masters don't want them to do their jobs. A long time ago, reporters' salaries were not very good, so they were able to know when on in their communities because they had to live in those areas, but nowadays, with today salaries, many of them don't live in their communities and like many CEOs, they move from one place to another place in search of greener pastures.
You also had many local newspapers being owned by the same rich family (like Eugene Pulliam who was the grandfather of former Vice President Daniel Quayle or Randolph Hearst)who use their local newspapers to advance their own personal, political, and economic agenda at the expense of the working people. Of course, nowadays, it is corporations that own most of the newspapers, TV stations, and radio stations.
Moreover, too many rich people live in total isolation from the rest of the population which is why people like Mitt Romney was saying stupid things like most middle class Americans are making $250,000 dollars more or less, or that all Americans have healthcare insurance when they go to the emergency room. If almost all Americans made $250,000 dollars a year, they could afford to paid unexpected medical bills, send their kids to college, be able to make the house payments and go on a vacation one or twice a year. Many of these rich people have no ties to the local communities at all when you look at the number of houses that they have around the country. Former President Bush, Sr., state that he was a resident of Maine; however, he was exposed as a fraud when he listed a hotel in Texas as his place of residence for tax purposes and that hotel was shut down to illegal drug activity. Some Congress people got in trouble with their constituents and the political opponents when they live in one state or city; however, it was founded out that they live in another city or state and their children were going to school in another state at taxpayers' expense.
Furthermore, too many rich people like Donald Trump, the Koch Brothers, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, and the Bush family only care about feeding their own egos and believe that the rest of society is to serve them not the other way around. They also cash in on their family's wealth, political, social, and economic connections to maintained their own political and economic power at the expense of society. They also expect the government and the American population to bail them out when they mismanage their companies. If you look at the Bush family, Ned Bush and George Bush, Jr., despite their education and their access to easy capital money, could not run their companies at all and if it was for their family connections, they would have been out on the streets a long time ago.
lol funny that, I actually found it using Google Earth! nice spot just across from Manhattan between the two bridges.
