Arian was not the only actress in this film...

who stunk up the joint. The actress who played Rourke's character's wife was only a couple of notches less awful.

Most of the rest of the actors were quite good though.

I wonder what it's like for an actor of Rourke's caliber to work with such awful actresses. I wonder what goes through his mind during their scenes, when he knows that he's delivering a professional performance, but that the final product will be a joke because of his colleague.

I quite liked Caroline Kava. I think the way those scenes were directed were a bigger problem - Cimino seemed to be trying to deliberately give them a completely different, lighter atmosphere than the scenes taking place within the city. Granted, this does pay-off in the completely unexpected intrusion of the city near the end.

Interesting take.

Out of curiosity, have you seen TDH and HG? What was your opinion of those?

I like The Deer Hunter well enough. I think it's lousy as a film about the Vietnam War (to be fair, most Hollywood versions are; even genuinely good films like Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket seem to use the conflict as a launching pad instead of exploring it). I do believe the movie only works if you accept the Robin Wood reading of 1) While it'd be too harsh to call Michael a villain, he is something of an overbearing bully who's a poor influence on everyone around him and 2) the central conflict only works if you accept there's some genuine, unresolved homoerotic tension between Michael and Nick (mostly Nick).

Heaven's Gate is a masterpiece and the best thing Cimino will ever make (although I'm sure he could have knocked Man's Fate out of the park; no small talk, considering its on of my ten favorite novels).

Nah, Deer Hunter is a better film than Heaven's Gate for two reasons. One, it doesn't outstay its welcome. And two, you can hear what the characters are saying for the first 30 minutes of the film.

I am glad I am not the only one who think Ariane Tzu stank up the movie. She is a bad actress and the role she plays is incredibly annoying.

i quite liked the connie character in a sad way.....i thought it was a great performance, about a woman who wasted her whole life for a guy who runs out on her with a girl 10 years younger.

It's unbelievable Connie left the race out of it and just went with the age. but it made her character so sympathetic.

Now the Tracy Tzu character was a racist ideolised view of asian women by men, hollywood men....that does mean it isnt true LOL

Cannot blame the actress for that, as you cannot blame Anne Hathaway for some crap Nolan gave her in Interstellar !!
