tsk
I'm astonished that somebody gave this film one star.
sharei'm astonished that you've the capacity to write if that's what you think.
shareEr...why exactly? It it such an unusual thing to think considering how good the film is? And why on earth are people so ready to bite other people's heads off on this damn board?
shareAnd why on earth are people so ready to bite other people's heads off on this damn board?
Maybe you thought I meant the film was bad...I'm saying that it's extremely good, and was shocked to think somebody might give only one star, ok?
shareFor one, it has been many MANY years since I have seen this movie. My memories are vague but a few scenes stuck with me. But the reason why I am writing this is to respond to what you said. I have no idea why people can be such jerks on the IMDb forums. I have written many things throughout and I end up getting all sorts of nasty messages back. All I am trying to do is state my opinion on something. But I wouldn't worry to much about it.
shareIf a film makes an usually unemotional person weep or be moved, it is not one star. I agree completely.
shareI cried more watching Threads. Maybe Threads milked the nuclear apocolyptic tears out of me or maybe I didn't like some of the corny, somewhat repetitive dialogue and slow jerky motion of the characters (plus the fact that it's a cartoon doesn't help). I liked it but preferred Threads. I think there's a movie form (vs cartoon) which I'll try and check out.
shareif you think the animated form is insufficient for that kind of topic you could try and watch the anime "Barefoot Gen". It has some memorable and explicit scenes and was made some years earlier than that movie. It uses a different approach.
Or the much better "Grave of the Fireflies", though it doesnt cover nuclear weapons.
Thanks for the recommendations. I've made a note. :)
shareHm, I prefer Barefoot Gen. I must have a heart of stone, because Grave of the Fireflies didn't really affect me -- but When the Wind Blows is the most emotive of the three, I think because of its simplicity. No need for walking corpses and eyeballs dangling from sockets etc.

Kirk Acevedo/Miguel Alvarez makes my heart feel strange
Take no notice of posters who's idea of a good animation is all done on a computer. This movie took many hundreds of artists in many different locations and each little movement meant a whole new sketch. Plus it was then super-imposed onto a mini model of the 'Jimilda' house. If you buy the DVD (Under £5 on Amazon when I got it recently), it has bonus features showing how it was done.
A lot of thought and man hours went into this and to boot it was a brilliant portrayal of a simple, country, retired couple and how they prepared for, coped and eventually died in what could one day become everybody's reality.
I agree Anive, it deserves a great deal more than one star
There's 3 ways a man can wear his hair; front-parted, side-parted or departed
I agree with the OP, any person(s) giving this masterpiece one star is a moron.
Hollywood can kiss my assssss!!!!
Nothing can compare to the Threads, that was the the most grim and graphic one ever produced on the nuclear war topic. The fact that it was live action makes it more grusome. Though Barefoot Gen was definately very effective and graphic for an animated film. The animation on this was more crude and the characters a little dull but was still pretty good. Threads was meant to horrify, Baregoot Gen to educate/relate the author's experience, WTWB is a satirical comedy, albeit a grim one, espicially the end. I gave Threads/Barefoot Gen and GOTF a 10, gave this an 8 but still all were very good.
