They coded out MAD. Why that word? Why not S.O.S., which is so much simpler to code out and easily recognizable as it's known by most people?

MAD written M.A.D means Mutually Assured Destruction and was a policy where by both the U.S(and it allies) and the U.S.S.R promised that in the event of ethier side launching an invasion or nuclear strike the other would retaliate in equal measure thus assure the destruction of both parties.
S.O.S is something completely different,it's a distress call. I hope that clears things up.
