So do they wrestle for state finals?

I think Chute will be ready for Lowden at state and demolishes him. He carried telephone poles on his shoulders up the bleachers for crying out loud. Final match wasn't very believable in my opinion. Down four points with 20 seconds at the bottom position is almost impossible to come back from. Being as good as chute was, he would of just tried to stall on top.

Have some questions about the match:

at the beginning of the match, Chute attempts the first takedown but the ref says it was outside the circle and ruled it a no takedown. But then he starts Lowden on the bottom and Chute on top. Then they started up again and the ref immediately awards Chute 2 points for takedown. There is a contradiction here. If it wasn't a takedown, wouldn't they of started them both up again? That was confusing. Did you notice at the end, when Lowden is raised up on eveyones shoulders, the scoreboard in the background had Lowden still down 4. If anything, it should of showed a 2 point difference because he had a reversal. I like noticing little faults like that.

Also, throughout the whole season, Lowden doesn't wrestle one time prior to the big match with Chute. Why not? And if he did, what weight would he of wrestled at since he was having trouble keeping that weight?

I still enjoyed this movie but I wanted to bring that up to see if I was missing something.

Lowden wrestles against that black guy at 178 LBS.
they stop the match because Lowden was bleeding too much. Remember that scene? But yah I do agree with your first point. If there was no take down (outside the circle) they should have been stood up.

reply

I forgot that match. Why was he bleeding then? Was he elbowed in the nose? I thought he started bleeding when he was trying to cut weight. Like when he was arm werestling his friend at the restaurant kitchen.

reply

If you listen after he got hit and the time out was called, he says to the coach that the guy "barely" hit him. I think this was an indication that it was because of his weight cutting that his nose started bleeding.

As much as I love this movie, especially as a former wrestler, I have to say that the faults with the final match were tough to swallow. You're absolutely right about your point... if it was no takedown, it should have been a scoreless match with both men on their feet. A takedown CAN'T happen when one wrestler starts from the disadvantage position. If anything, the final score would have put Louden up by two at the buzzer (Hence, he didn't have to "stick him," as coach stated). If he were down by four, he would have cut it to three with an escape, drew within one on the head-and-arm takedown, and won by two with his three nearfall points. Other than that, great flick.

Loudon will go back to 178 for the state tourney. There's no way he could stay in the lower weight class and have the strength to make it to the finals. My prediction is that Loudon wins state in 178. He would get destroyed in the Iowa state tourney though.

reply

He probably wouldn't qualify in Iowa. Or Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and Oklahoma for that matter.

reply

Well even if he doesn't "stick him", he still would of won by points, right? Down four, he gets one point for the escape, two for the take down, and three for nearfall points.

Jesus people its a fricken movie. Why is it no matter what movie it is there is always one or two people that have to complain about the realism. If they had made the ending any different it wouldn't have had nearly the emotional impact that this ending had and that would have only had a negative impact on the film itself. This is without a doubt one of the better sports movies and the fact that its about wrestling, a sport that most people don't give a flying crap about, and its still this entertaining is just a huge testament to how well made this film really is as it still draws you in regardless of how you feel about the sport itself and that is a pretty amazing feat when you stop and think about it.

Its got great performances from the very young Mathew Modine and Linda Fiorintino, An amazing soundtrack that fits perfectly the entire film, and amazing writing that is so well done that again it ends up making you interested in something you would otherwise not give a flying crap about. Its without a doubt one of the better sports films made in recent years and to end up dissing it because the ending went with a very emotionally charged ending over a more realistic ending is really just beyond ridiculous and it only makes me thankful that people like yourself are not the ones making such films because they wouldn't be nearly as entertaining.

We deal with realism 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year as its the universe we live in. Why in gods name would you want cinema to take you to that same place you live in 24 hours a day. I don't know about you guys but I dont watch films for realism. I watch films for entertainment and I don't care what people say, realism is never going to be as entertaining as films that are not limited by that boundary.

In the book he graduates in December and doesnt' even wrestle at State.

The book ends as the match with Shute begins.

It's not realism...it's a simple matter of knowing the rules of wrestling. It was a badly edited scene and none of the scoring made any sense. It's like if in a soccer movie, the goalie blocks a shot, but the score increases any way. It's hard to swallow.

Cops point out errors in movies with unrealistic shootouts/procedures, etc. Lawyers do the same for court based shows, and apparently wrestlers do the same with wrestling scenes. Looks like human nature. This is why there is such as large trivia/goof section on IMDB. I enjoy the "actual" perspective this brings and don't think it detracts from the show/film.

for someone who never wrestled in high school, the points system was confusing. It wouldn't have been hard for the screen writer, director, and editor, as well as the principal cast to take in a few high school wrestling matches to learn the rules and point system of wrestling, so that they can make a decent, accurate fight scene.
There are some great sports movies with inaccuracies. Rocky won best picture, yet there would be no way a fighter would be allowed to get that butchered in the ring and make it to the final round, Thrilla in Manilla is the closest I can think of. Sean Astin in Rudy was way too small to be a division 2 d back, and yet he makes the Notre Dame practice squad (if you look at pics of the real Rudy Ruttiger, he was much bulkier although still small for that team.)

reply

Louden was not going to stay at 168lbs for state, he was going to go back to 190lbs which is where he was going to wrestle at in college.
