Backup Anyone?

I wrestled a little in High School, but the season was during one of the other sports I played, AND I threw someone a little too hard and broke his collarbone, so the coach probably wouldn't have let me join the team, knowing I put one of his wrestlers on the sidelines?

My question is, don't most wrestling teams, especially at a home match, have the "whole" team there? Since Loudon was late, couldn't the "other" '68 pounder have wrestled Shute, instead of giving him an automatic forfeit?

I know this is a movie and you HAD to have Loudon wrestle Shute with the subsequent drama, but isn't there usually a "backup" wrestler at any given weight?

Thanks.

Spokane in the 80's? Not a whole lot of guys were given to wearing tights back then. I coul easily see how the school might lack a 168lb alternative.

Looking at Shute, I would have eaten Twinkies every day just to get my ass OUT of that weight class.

Spokane in the 80's, was a whole lot bigger than my city... we had no problem fielding an "extra" '68 pounder. My high school had 1200 students, but take a look at this... they had PLENTY of guys.

I believe you have it backwards... I'll bet you there were MORE guys WANTING to wear tights back then, simply because there were more guys that WEREN'T eating Twinkies and playing Play Stations all the time. Have you SEEN todays kids? I don't know how old you are, but you "sound" young. Do you think that wearing wrestling tights, is "gay"? Tell that to Shute, or THIS guy!

It was the 80's. Even in "The Breakfast Club" Andrew was mocked for wearing "tights", being on the wrestling team. having the number of students isn;t the problem. it's having the number of interested students!

But yeah, by the looks of the team, i don;t see why they wouldn;t have had an alternate among them for that weight class. (unless they all employed the Twinkie option I mentioned earlier).

I was in high school in the 80's just before this movie came out and I've got to say that wrestling wasn;t that big back then. My school's wrestling team was less than half the size of Louden's. My wife's school's team (in Spokane in 1984) was about 14 boys total. I imagine it probably jumped up in 1986 after this film was made though.

But in my neck of the woods, we were too busy doing bong hits, playing Nintendo, eating twinkies and fantasizing about being rock stars. Wrestling some guy in tights just wasn't on our agenda back then.
Hell, to us, wrestling was Hulk Hogan, The Iron Shiek and King Kong Bundy. Just comical and ridiculous.
