analysis

I don't understand why do people like the person in the featured commentary waste time with such in-depth analysis of films like these. It was simply a movie meant to entertain which it did. Yes, Modine looked older but he was definitely cute and likeable. Yes, Fiorentino looked like a tomboy but I think she was supposed to. Sometimes it's better to just sit back, relax, watch and allow yourself to be entertained. It by no way means that you are less intelligent then anyone else if you find yourself entertained by nice fluffy films like Vision Quest nor does it mean you are some emotional sucker. It just means that you know how to kick back sometimes, let your guard down and just chill.

I wonder if I'm the only person who doesn't see this film as mindless entertainment.

reply

On the surface it seems like mindless junk from the 80's, but it's actually quite deeper than most might first realize. Those who don't agree should pick up the book, it fills in the holes a little bit better. But I think the movies still did a great job of chronicling the teenage struggles. Modine is perfect in this as well. Sure he looks 30 years old, but his actions and dialogue hit right on as a teenager.

So in short Travis......you're not the only one.

- Cornbread. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

Neither of you are alone. I just picked up the DVD at Best Buy and can't wait to watch it again. A very cool coming of age movie . Actually, I was in 10th grade when the movie came out. Those were fun times, too. These movies take me back to those times.

Yeah, this could be interpreted as mindless entertainment, but I actually think it also gives you a few things to think about. I thought it did a good job of dealing with teenage isues without being too full of teenage angst. Louden, while at times a typical immature 18 year old, has other moments where he shows wisdom beyond his years. And you don't have to be a wrestler, or even an athlete, to be inspired by Louden's "quest" to find the best in himself and leave his mark. It is almost a zen like mission where the process is much more rewarding than the result. By the time of the match with Shute, Louden had already won. But hey, his victory was the icing on the cake and an inspirational end to an entertaining as well as thoughtful movie.

reply

It's still a "cult" wrestler movie. Almost every high school wrestler has seen and been inspired by this movie.

reply

i definitly agree with that, i agree its kinda corny at times but theres only like 2 movies based on wrestling. We wrestlers have to take what we can get.

reply

The only other movie I've seen that even has wrestling in it was "The World According To Garp" and that was just a small piece. Did I miss one? I clearly remember sitting on the edge of my seat in the theater during Garp's match and saying "Double Chicken Wing, it's all over!"

Another unbelievable movie.

Wrestling is terribly underrated. You have to experience it for yourself to ever really understand it. The is nothing like stepping on the mat to go to work after countless hours in the room and on the road working your tail off.

You can't be in better shape than a wrestler, hardest workouts there are. And god does the misery of it feel good.

reply

You are completely correct. Nobody understands it unless they havewrestled before. I tried to explain it to someone who played soccer and he basically laughed at me. I graduated from high school 2 years ago and havent wrestled since...boy do I miss it.

reply

I have not wrestled since 1997 when I was hurt my Freshman year in college and not a day goes by I don't think about it.

I work with a couple of former hockey players and we get into this discussion all the time at work. How they feel hockey is much of a harder sport and you have to be in better shape for that. I tried to explain what it takes to go for a full match against a stud, that you win by a point and what kind of work and training that went into it everyday. They don't know they never experienced. Plus we had to do all of this without hardly eating !

The only other movie at this time that I can think of that has some wrestling in it is Born on the 4th of July.

Check out Reversal (2001). It is another wrestling movie (kind of like Vision Quest). The DVD has bonus features with tips on nutrition and workouts specifically for wrestlers trying to drop weight without having to starve themselves. Not a bad film. It is a bit cheesy at times, but so was Vision Quest. Check out and judge for yourself.

For a truly awful wrestling movie experience try One More Shot

Kuch should of body slammed his dad.

reply

Don't worry, Kuch's dad gets shot in "Cold Mountain"

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

As far as being in shape goes, we wrestlers were running with the cross country guys for practice...THEN we'd go into the dungeon for the real workout.

Hey follks,
Im 43 years old and remember that i was out of college when this movie came out! Twenty some odd years later i still watch this movie and get the same feelings and thoughts and remember the smells which come to mind as i wrestled in high school and college. I describe this as my first love, i will never forget it, and this movie always reminds me of that love and the passion which i had for the sport.I think one of my favorite scenes in the movie is when the cook is getting ready to see Lauden wrestle. lauden explains that its only six minutes why such a fuss. The cook replies, "Its not the six minutes, its what happens in that six minutes!" When you get to be my age, dont forget to look back and remember, its what you have done with your six minutes that counts, because if it was worth it, you will never forget It!

reply

It was a good movie, but not an Academy Award winner. I am fine with that.
